Marilyn Monroe Merlot 2009

Marilyn Monroe Merlot 2009, $19.49-$26.99, 90 points, is appropriately enough a sensual wine; the Merlot named after the actress is round, gently perfumed, rich and elegant.
Cranberry and pomegranate colors, a toasty fragrance, with a juicy blackberry and currant flavor, garnished by whispers of violets, trailing spice and everything nice fairly finishes this wine.

Nova Wines
Marilyn' Biography

Just a quick comment: this is not a fly-by wine, nor is an after-thought, but there is a tradition here and a very good wine!

Valckenberg Pfalz 2011 Gewurztraminer

Valckenberg Pfalz 2011 Gewurztraminer, $9.34-$14.99, 88 points, has a bright lemon/lime color.
The aroma is a beautiful lychee nut with hints of light melon, and a floral tone.
A medium-plus body is lush, rich, fair acidity, a bit sweet, with a bursting plethora of white fruit flavors, all of which trail weakly into the anti-climatic finish.

Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Wines

Robert Mondavi Private Selection 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, $6.79-$10.99, 89 points, is the wine down on its side and to the left, and if you haven't heard of it, either you will hear of it or you just tend to grab an inexpensive bottle of wine off the shelf; with an incredible price and an incredible wine, this one needs to stick in your memory to take with you to parties, for you dinner guests, or even for a gift!
Why! Why! Why!
Robert Mondavi Private Selection 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon has a slightly cloudy dark ruby color  and the aroma is a lovely medley of whispers, with sweet cooking spice, toasty red fruit, and hints of blueberry wafting out of the glass.
A medium to medium-plus body carries good acidity with firm lasting tannin.
Flavors of red fruit, though just a bit thin are good, and trail gently into a warm spicy finish with the faintest hint of heat (13.5% alcohol).
I was surprised by the quality of this wine, and though, I'm guessing, this is a mass produced, mass appeal red wine, doesn't mean you shouldn't buy this wine. Maybe you have a problem with the big boy producers (I understand that), but like Apple Inc, or Microsoft, the average consumer will want convenience and value; this wine has both, and matches many $15-$20 Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Decoy Sonoma County 2010 Zinfandel

Decoy Sonoma County 2010 Zinfandel, $12.99-$24.99, 91 points, is my "best-buy" table-wine of the year!
Caveat emptor [Latin, Let the buyer beware.], this is not a smooth, gentle Merlot, nor is it a lush and rich Cabernet Sauvignon, a jammy Lodi Zin, a smooth Russian River Zinfandel, or a thin-tasting "white" Zinfandel, but a brightly intense dry red wine good enough to stand alone or better with spicy foods (Pepperoni pizza comes to mind), but remember that at $12.99 you're getting better than a $25 bottle of wine! No one has paid me to say this, and no wine was given to me. This determination has been distilling in my mind for some time now, ever since it became a NHLS "Power-buy". I have steered several people in this direction over the last few months, and I told them to scold me if I wasn't right about this wine; that invitation holds true to you too,

Decoy Sonoma County 2010 Zinfandel has a bright crystal ruby color.
The aroma is cinnamon, clove, red cherry and a floral quality.
A medium body carries food-friendly acidity, moderate tannin for firmness, bramble berry and red cherry fruit, with a moderate finish bursting with spice and trailing on a hint of heat (14.5% alcohol).

Château Tanunda Grand Barossa 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon

Château Tanunda Grand Barossa 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, $15.99-$17.99, 89 points, has a clean Burgundy pomegranate red color, and a broad clear rim.
The aroma is rich red fruit with sweet cooking spice and a touch of heat (14.5% alcohol).
A medium body carries good acidity and structured tannin, with just a kangaroo-hair of tartness.
Flavors of red cherry, a hint of flowers, and damson plum, are fair, but the spice, which is excellent, soon kicks in and into the finish with some of that Aussie heat that makes this a NHWM standout wine.

Christmas photo gallery and gifting that someone special!

Christmas photo gallery is my way of saying: How do I (you) buy someone a bottle of wine for Christmas?
1. How much do you want to pay?
2. What varietal (grape type i.e. Merlot etc. White or Red) are you looking for?
3. Do you want to order wine through a package carrier? I've prided myself on buying almost every wine here in NH, so ordering wine through the mail is not my forte, and checking with shippers and wineries is necessary to verify that they are approved by the Sate of New Hampshire to ship here. Damaged bottles is always a possibility.
Recently a store clerk from Market basket asked me what Cabernet Sauvignon wine I recommended for under $15, and the above questions were what I asked him.
If you are looking for Barefoot or Twin Oak wines, then almost no thought at all is required (Some will be thrilled with those wines), but if you are looking for something just a bit out of the norm, intriguing, personal, and yes, available, then just a few minutes will yield a "treasure" for that "someone" special.
I have two very special wines given to me that I'll always treasure, and I'm sure that's what you would want as well.
Feel free to ask me (See comments), and I'll do my best to get you a personalized answer.

Bordeaux Red Wines

Bordeaux Red Wines briefly stated are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and are from the Bordeaux region of France.

Saint Emilion September 2012 Reclassification

French wine labels can be confusing, so davidstuff.com is here to help.

My disclaimer is I don't pretend to be any kind of expert. However I do enjoy all kinds of wines, especially with my dinner, and have found the limited marketing of Bordeaux wines in New Hampshire, and purchasing and tasting advice somewhat limited. So when I taste a wine, I note a wine, and pass what I've gleaned to those interested.
The following is my list of tasted Bordeaux red wines. This list is intended to be convenient and comparative, but it is also an attempt to accommodate smart phones users.
This list is a work in progress.

Finally, I'd like to bring-up a bit of a controversy regarding "Old" world red wines and "New" world red wines and the transition which occurs as you drink them; from the moment you open that bottle, the wine begins to change. So why do some red wines turn bad tasting so soon?
Well, more than one "casual" wine taster has asked me this question, a question that has been bothering me for some time now.
David Boyer explains the why, where, and how the wine-making philosophy of wineries influences what happens not only in the bottle, but in your glass. Think Structure!

Amon-Ra 2006 Shiraz Revisited

Amon-Ra 2006 Shiraz Revisited, is a replay of of Ben Glaetzer's remakable red wine from the Barossa Valley ($80.74-$94.99, 96 points)
All I can say is that the three of us were in awe of this absolutely wonderful red wine. Ben says "this is how you work it."
Ethan says "give it to yourself-best wine ever."

Clos Du Val Napa Valley 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon

Clos Du Val Napa Valley 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, $25.49-$39.99, 92 points, is a brilliant densely ruby color with a watery clear rim.
The nose is a reticent lightly sweet red cherry and sweet cooking spice, with just a hint of earth.
With a medium to medium-plus body swirling legs down the glass, potent acids rain-down the palate with equally firm, but approachable tannin.
The flavor is a clean pomegranate, red fruit, and a hint of violets which quickly gets lost in the incredibly long black and white pepper, spicy finish.
With the slightest sense of alcohol (13.5%), this is a beautifully focused and crafted wine, but my appreciation of Clos Du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon had its genesis before today.

SALMoN RUN Finger Lakes 2011 Riesling

SALMoN RUN Finger Lakes 2011 Riesling, $10.99-$13.99, 90 points, is a very light lime color with a gray tone.
The aroma is watermelon rind with apple blossom.
A light-plus bodied white wine with excellent acidity, making for that Asian cuisine food friendliness.
Flavors consist of pome, with tart apple dominant, but hints of citrus and minerals make for a crisp-clean white wine that will not disappoint. The finish is a trailing of the palate.
There's not a lot of complexity, but that's not what we're (I'm) looking for here, rather, I'm looking for an off dry to dry white wine with a pleasant flavor to sip or pair with fish, brown fried rice, and a PoPo Platter.
I continue to be impressed with these Finger lakes Rieslings! I think you will be too.

Whitehall Lane Napa Valley Reserve 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon

Whitehall Lane Napa Valley Reserve 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, $62.99-$69.99, 92 points, has the color of black currant to Shiraz purple, near black at the core with a clear rim.
The bouquet is massive with a near perfect blend of trace fragrances including oak, coffee, crushed sweet red raspberry, rose pedal, and sweet cooking spices; I would have no problem with you adding a list to that.
The medium-plus body has good acidity and approachable tannin.
Early palate intense spice nails the beginning of this wine, but a strong floral quality (typical for Whitehall's "big" cabs) dominates. However, the the rites of passage have just begun; you'll find flavors as varied as the nose. I found violets, licorice, chocolate, leather, chalky plum, and white pepper, much of which trailed into the long finish with a touch of heat (14.5%) alcohol). Some of this floral intensity does fade a bit with air, but so does the intensity of the wine.
Obviously some wine tasters like this style of wine, and I can appreciate this noble effort, but I'm not sure, at least for me, that all these flavors hold the Gestalt together.
The bottle design is regal, and the glass enclosure is exquisite.

It is now three days after I did this review and I'm just finishing the wine; I must say that an extended time of breathing has coalesced some conflicting aspects of the Whitehall Lane Napa Valley Reserve 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, and transformed it into a more focused presentation. Note that I've never done this for a wine before, but the transition has changed my opinion from: "not recommended (QPR)" to a NHWM recommend.

Decoy Napa County 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

Decoy Napa County 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, $17.99-
$25.99, 91 points, is a slightly cloudy ruby-red with a purple hue and a broad transparent rim.
With an amazing aroma of clove, cinnamon, cedar, hints of licorice, black pepper, and pinewood, it's the potpourri of wine.
This is a medium bodied red wine with an excellent balance of acidity and tannin.
The flavor is robust and clean; Red and black cherry, black currant and  juicy boysenberry, hints of licorice and dried herbs all found their way to the inevitable finish with a bit of trailing spice.

Cupcake Central Coast 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

Cupcake Central Coast 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, $6.99-$10.99, 86 points, is a medium-bodied dry red wine, though there is a bit of sweet red cherry late palate and on the finish.
The color is a slightly cloudy ruby with a clear outer rim.
The spicy grape aroma dominates and is profuse throughout the tasting experience, but just a hint of rubber was a little unpleasant.
I found good acidity and the tannin is mild, but this is a rough Cabernet, almost sharp.
Overall, for 7 bucks, this is not a bad everyday table wine, but maybe too spicy, and lacking the traditional "mouth-feel" of a Cabernet, maybe unappreciated by some at the table.

Château d'Escurac 2009 Bourdeaux Médoc

Château d'Escurac 2009 Bourdeaux Médoc, $19.54-$22.99, 91 points, is dense ruby in color to opaque at the core and clear at the rim.
The aroma is soft with sweet red cherry and spice with a touch of earth.
The near full body is very acidic and quite tannic, but the flavor overcomes these extremes with a bounty of black and red fruit with gentle floral tones all carried into a long spicy finish that culminates with a touch of heat (14.5% alcohol)
This wine is just a bit edgy, but as I've mentioned before, the flavor is excellent, and actually paired better with our strip steak than did the Chateau Talbot Bordeaux;  see, my guest was served two wines blind. He picked the better of the two, but agreed with the perfection of pairing Château d'Escurac 2009 Bourdeaux Médoc with our meal, and just sitting-back with the Talbot.

Christmas Dreaming-No Wine-No Whining!

For me, Christmas Dreaming is mostly remembering that through thick-and-thin, my best memories were about Christmas. Perry Como sings Christmas Eve and Burl Ives adds to the caroling, not forgetting the plethora and escalation of innumerable other heavy-weights like Alvin.
The family, what was left of it, watched "A Christmas Carol" with Alastair Sim, and believed that "goodness" could actually triumph over evil. The things, the gifts often ruined the idea of Christmas, because Christmas had a spirit to it, one that  like the "Twilight Zone Christmas" captured in the child-like fantasy of joy rather than greed, peace rather than war, and hope over despair.
Being a Pollyanna should be a child's state of mind. Being a child should be just that, a child, with dreams, hopes, and confidence that "all is well", faith if you will.
Jesus said, that if a person did not come to God like a child they would never see Him. Heaven is for children my friend; see if there is any of that twinkle left in your eye, in the melody of your heart, and in your hope.
If Sarah Brightman can sing of Believing in Christmas, I think you can believe too! Don't let the Grinch steal that from you.
If "reason" is what you need or want, C.S. Lewis used reason, and often referred to Christmas in his writing. He wrote Mere Christianity to engage and challenge the "adult" mind to consider the invitation, by the venue of reason, to come to the joy that is Christmas.
So, no wine, no whining, but I wish you a Merry Christmas Dreaming!

Because the idea (essence), the story, the love philosophy of Jesus, if not the reality of Jesus to some, is so beautiful and perfect for hope and joy, that a child's dream of Him and His angels will always transcend the ugly in this world.

Chateau Talbot 2009 Saint Julien

Chateau Talbot 2009 Saint Julien, is a wine for special occasions, and receiving a good friend from "over-there" Europe is one of those occasions.
So, I'm cooking grass-fed strip steaks and serving up a conversation-relaxation wine to remember, and music: The Girl with the Flaxen Hair is a good start!
Chateau Talbot 2009 Saint Julien, $69.99-$86.99, 94 points, is more the color of bright, but slightly cloudy Burgundy/pomegranate than Bordeaux/black currant, and trailed transparent around the edge.
The aroma is a delicate violets and forest floor with cedar and hints of sweet cooking spice.
The medium-plus body is acidic and the grainy tannin is smoothly layered and approachable.
The texture of this wine is robustly round, but soft and velvety.
Flavors are a complexity of transition, from red cherry to black and boysenberry with hints of smoke, violets, licorice.
The long finish amplifies the palate and adds spice tones.

Cupcake! Merlot Madness Again?

Yes, I know, I haven't had a Merlot in about a hundred years, the Miles Merlot fit is old hat, and "Cupcake isn't worth blogging about!"
Cupcake 2010 Merlot, $6.99-$10.99, 86 points, is worth blogging about! Oh, and Miles' rant will always be a Hoot!
The color is a light purple-red with orange hues.
With hints of spice and red grape on the nose, the petrol aroma is slight.
Light to medium bodied red wine, Cupcake 2010 Merlot has good acidity and mild tannin carrying flavors of strawberry and raspberry with a hint of tactile glycerol.
There's a fair finish here, having plenty of spice makes an impression.
Advocacy corner: For 7 bucks you could do much worse. If you're looking for a pretty good red wine, in particular a Merlot, I wouldn't hesitate to grab a few of these. Though this Merlot is a bit "rough" around the edges, 86 points is my way of declaring this wine a real value, and I think it will pair well with pizza, burgers, hot dogs, Taco Bells,  heck, with almost any red meat.
I bought my bunch of Cupcake wines at the Market Basket super market in Londonderry ($6.99 with coupon).
