Barboursville Vineyards Virginia 2012 Cabernet Franc Reserve

Barboursville Vineyards (Virginia) 2012 Cabernet Franc Reserve, $24.99, 90 points, poured leggy with a broad clear wine ring, with the wine being a lovely opaque burgundy purple/red.
The pleasant grapey, earthy, and slightly floral aromas were propitious.
Medium-plus bodied with fair to good acidity and supportive mellow tannins managed a rather complex flavor profile of black fruit, coffee, and tobacco notes.
Finished fair on the trailing palate with some warm spices and a well integrated 14.2% alcohol.
I've looked for this wine for three years and finally found it at the Harvest Market Bedford; The wine buyer should be congratulated for the wine selection as a whole.

  1. Just a two day's later note that this CF still held-up quite well; I'm impressed!

  2. Dennis,

Love Barboursville! Especially this wine. It's better than any pure CA Cabernet Franc I've ever had. A friend turned me onto Barboursville a long time ago. The vines for the estate were originally brought to the US from Italy by the Mazzei Family - friends of Thomas Jefferson - who at the time knew Governor Barbour very well. There's lots of history to this estate and it's a great story.

I have a few bottles left and one of their Octagon which I'm looking forward to trying.

  3. Virginian? Sounds interesting. And I can imagine that the CF grape would do quite well in Virginia. I have had a Finger Lakes CF in the past that was exceedingly quaffable.

    1. Very good wine, which I intend to buy more of. I think it will be great as a "bring a blind tasting wine" to test your friends!
