Smells of lime and hints of lemon were good.

Beaulieu Vineyard~BV~Napa Valley Tapestry 2010 Red Wine Reserve

Beaulieu Vineyard~BV~Napa Valley Tapestry 2010 Red Wine Reserve, $41.99-$55.99, 93+ points, appeared a rich midnight purple/red trending deep ruby toward the clear rim at the leggy glass wall.
Profuse aromas of cedar, cinnamon, black cherry cordial, and violets were outstanding.
The full body was luscious, carried good acidity, comfortably layered tannin, black fruit with blueberry, coffee notes, as well as reflecting the flavors of the aromas, all of which impressed.
Finished on the trailing palate with eucalyptus, mint, spice, and accents of the 14.8% alcohol.
This is an exceptional wine, a bit pricy, but compared to what? Beaulieu Vineyard~BV~Napa Valley Tapestry 2010 Red Wine Reserve is dense, rich, fruity, and nuanced!

Sterling Vineyards Napa County 2013 Sauvignon Blanc

Sterling Vineyards Napa County 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, $12.99-$14.99, 90 points, appeared a light brass color trending almost clear at the glass wall.
The dominant aroma of flowers were accented with tangerine and grapefruit.
With its light crisp citrus body and good acidity, this typical Cali Sauvignon Blanc excels at being typical, is delicious, and mirrors the aroma for bright flavors with grassy notes, refreshing texture, and a sound structure.
Finished with the finesse of subtle honeysuckle and the 13.5% alcohol.

Clos Pegase Mitsuke's Vineyard Carneros-Napa Valley 2010 Chardonnay Maybe NAPA is Shook-up, But Tasting Fine!

Clos Pegase Mitsuke's Vineyard Carneros-Napa Valley 2010 Chardonnay, $20.95-$29.99, 90 points, appeared a deep rustic gold color.
Cantaloupe and tangerine aromas were okay.
This near full-bodied Chardonnay showed fair acidity, lush/smooth texture, and Napa Valley Terroir without being too over-the-top with oak or typical buttery notes that resemble slopped on buttered toast.
Clean with cold-stone notes, flavors that mirrored the aromas, and a long finish consisting of a trailing palate, crème brûlée, and a hint of the 14.5% alcohol.
The Clos Pegase Mitsuke's Vineyard Carneros-Napa Valley 2010 Chardonnay was a very good partner with my sautéed Red-fish and Crab Rangoon.

Ca' Momi Napa Valley 2012 Merlot

Ca' Momi Napa Valley 2012 Merlot, $9.99-$19.99, 90+ points, appeared opaque at the core and trended a lovely crushed blackberry purple/red before a thin silver ring at the glass wall.
Aromatic plum, grape, clove, with hints of cocoa powder impressed.
The smooth medium-plus body as was the acidity, with a complementary flavor profile of dusty cocoa powder and plum were near perfectly supported by strident underlining tannin which trailed deep into the long finish of ever-so slight green notes of grape, 13.9% alcohol, and spice.

Trefethen Oak Knoll Napa Valley Family Vineyard 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

Trefethen Oak Knoll Napa Valley Family Vineyard 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, $45.06-$57.99, 91 points, poured core black trending a beautiful purple/red up to the transparent ring at the glass wall.
Redolent is a descriptor of a rich fragrant wine, and the Trefethen Cab is just that: profuse cedar, black currant, and violets on the nose were lovely.
Medium-plus bodied with good acidity, layered moderate tannin, and strawberry, pomegranate, black currant fruit flavors lead to a long finish on the trailing palate with violets and a hint of the 14.1% alcohol.

Napa Earthquake Necessitates Easing The Burden: Drink Napa Wines!

It has been a while
since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake,
and at first I had NO idea just how much damage yesterday's Napa Valley earthquake had done, and also the likelihood of aftershocks,
but the one thing I do that might help
 my friends in Napa Valley is to drink and promote their wines;
so, I'll have at it!
Please think of Napa when you buy wine!

Segal's Fusion (Israel) 2012 Chardonnay/Colombard Dry White Wine

Segal's Fusion (Israel) 2012 Chardonnay/Colombard Dry White Wine,
$13.99-$15.99, 89 points, poured a very light brass color and transitioned water clear to the glass edge.
The exotic aromas of melon, apple, pineapple, honeysuckle, and other flower notes were spectacular.
Tart lemon and grapefruit with grassy notes left me wondering why this wasn't a Sauvignon Blanc! Neither fish nor foul, the Fusion White Wine was delicious, showing a near medium body with good acidity, definitely dry, flavors that mirrored the aromas, and finished long on tart citrus notes and a well integrated 13% alcohol.

Colombard described by the WineGeeks.

Waterstone Napa Valley 2012 Sauvignon Blanc

Waterstone Napa Valley 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, $8.98-$20.99 (NHLS gift card applied), 92 points, poured a lovely polished light gold color.
Grapefruit, cantaloupe, and honeysuckle aromas were pleasant.
The very smooth near medium body carried good acidity adding sparks to this otherwise elegant, but properly domesticated Sauvignon Blanc.
Flavors mirrored the aromas with tangerine notes in the background.
Finished long with green melon, a hint of ginger, and its 13.5% alcohol.
Varietals were 82% Sauvignon Blanc and 18% Semillon sourced from the Chiles Valley region of Napa Valley, where my 'wine-buds' have always have been pleased.
I've only been buying the 2013 Sauvignon Blancs, but when I saw the Waterstone offered, though a 2012, I jumped on it, and I'm very glad I did.

Raiza Rioja 2007 Tempranillo Reserva, $13.50-$18.00, 90+ points, displayed colors of pomegranate and bright ruby with a transparent rim at the leggy glass wall. Blackberry, clove, sea air, and leather were pleasant on the nose. Medium bodied with mouth-watering acidity and accelerating tannin that enhanced the subtle black cherry and plum flavors. Finished long on cola, hints of eucalyptus, warm alcohol (14%), and spice notes.
I bought this exceptional red wine at the Londonderry Hannaford's Super Market.

Merriam Vineyards Windacre Russian River Valley 2010 Merlot

Merriam Vineyards Windacre Russian River Valley 2010 Merlot, $18.69-$27.99 (NHLS gift card applied), 91+ points, poured core black and trended a rich Bordeaux purple/red toward the clear rim at the leggy glass wall.
Notes of smoky cedar, earth, and black currant on the nose were pleasant.
The rather smooth medium-plus body carried good acidity and layered mild-plus tannin.
Coffee, licorice, blackberry, Boysenberry, and plum were juicy and well balanced.
Finished well with spice, black cherry cordial, and some warmth from the 14.2% alcohol.
Those that know me, know I'm not a Merlot kind of guy, but when Jim from the NHLS gave me his opinion that this was the best Merlot he had ever had, and after I just had the 'best' 2013 vintage SB wine, which too was a Merriam Vineyards wine, I didn't hesitate to grab this one; I'm glad I did!  If you have a propensity to drink Merlot red wine, and don't mind spending a few extra green-backs, then this just might be the best Merlot you've ever had.

Bommarito Napa Valley (Whitehall Lane) 2013 Sauvignon Blanc

Bommarito Napa Valley (Whitehall Lane) 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, $9.09-$18.99 (NHLS gift-card applied), 88 points, poured a light brass color and trended water clear toward the glass rim.
The aromas of lemon-grass and honeysuckle were faint, but were lovely.
A light bodied white wine with good acidity, and tenuous flavors of grapefruit, lemon-grass, ripe honeydew melon, a floral component, tangerine, and an unusually prominent alcohol (13.2%) which carried deep into the fair flash/finish of ginger notes.
Texturally, white wines tend to transition from crisp-cold to a more creamy-warm, and this was especially true of the Bommarito Napa Valley SB (see Sur lie aging).
Paired well with my Maine Lobster roll.

A lovely toasty blackberry aroma was garnished with hints of chocolate.
Black fruit, red raspberry, chocolate with cola notes were rich, fruity, and carried on a medium-plus body of fair-plus acidity and mild tannin.
Flavors mirrored the aroma, and migrated well into the finish with hints of the 13% alcohol and spice notes.

Montupoli 2012 Monteplciano d' Abruzzo

Montupoli 2012 Monteplciano d' Abruzzo, $9.99, 89 points, poured opaque at the core and trended a crushed blackberry purple/red toward the clear rim at the glass wall.
Profuse fruit on the nose was fair.
The smooth fruity medium body carried fair acidity and mellow tannin with flavors of blueberry, blackberry, red raspberry, and loads of chocolate notes.
Finished very long on the trailing palate, a touch of spice, and a hint of warmth from the 13% alcohol, but the chocolate notes almost never ended.
I bought this wine at the Main Street Liquor Mart in Medford, Ma., and enjoyed this wine with pizza, buffalo chicken, and by itself.

Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Red Wine

Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Red Wine (D.O.C.) is made from the Montepulciano varietal (at least 85%).
INTOWINE Explains Montepulciano d’Abruzzo in detail.

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi - Castello di Pomino 2012 Chardonnay

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi - Castello di Pomino 2012 Chardonnay, $16.99-$19.99, 90 points, poured a light golden color with just the faintest lime-green hue.
The aroma was subtle apple and tangerine, while the near medium body delicately carried fair-plus acidity with flavor hints of lemon and cool-wet stony minerals.
Finished as it began, gently with a touch of ginger and a well integrated 12.5% alcohol.
Pomino Chardonnay is nothing like a Cali Chardonnay, but whispers what most Cali's shout, and just might take some time adjusting to.

Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley 2011 Chardonnay

Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley 2011 Chardonnay, $40.69-$49.99 (NHLS gift card applied), 93 points, appeared as a burnished brass color with a bronze tint.
Apples, cantaloupe, tomato juice, and flowers on the nose were good.
Medium to almost medium-plus bodied, soft, though crisp, yet substantial, clean, complex and bright, no over-the-top caramel, vanilla, butter, or alcohol here (13.5%).
Those that know me know that I prefer Sauvignon Blanc over Chardonnay, but if more Chardonnays tasted this good that could change; the queen of white wines just might take back her throne.
There is a touch of vanilla, but just a touch, and there's apple, peach, wet stone, a floral component, and mystery melon.
Finished long on the trailing palate with just a touch of ginger and vanilla.

Duck Pond (Fries Family Cellars) Willamette Valley 2012 Pinot Gris

Duck Pond (Fries Family Cellars) Willamette Valley 2012 Pinot Gris, $9.34-$13.99, 84 points, appeared a very light lime-green trending water clear.
Subtle aromas of apple, honeydew melon, and cantaloupe were okay.
Light bodied with mild acidity carried a subtle flavor profile that reflected the aromas well.
Finished fair, but a bit thin on the trailing palate with some of the 14.1% alcohol filling the void.
This is quintessentially a summer white wine that will not interfere with your cuisine at all, and will hardly be noticed.

David Girard El Dorado 2009 Syrah

David Girard El Dorado 2009 Syrah, $10.19-$26.99, 91 points, appeared core opaque trending a healthy purple/red toward the clear rim and leggy glass wall.
A toasty boysenberry with hints of coffee on the nose were good.
Near full bodied with fair acidity, smooth, layered easy tannin, and flavors that matched the nose with blueberry and cola notes.
Finished well on the trailing palate, plum, violets, just hint of white pepper, and a well integrated 14.3% alcohol.
I tend to think this Syrah has peaked; so buy to drink now.
Another amazing value red wine that every dyed-in-the-wool Merlot lover might want to taste!

Frei Brothers Russian River Valley 2007 Syrah Reserve

Frei Brothers Russian River Valley 2007 Syrah Reserve, $13.50-$18.00, 83 points, appeared core black trending a slightly cloudy ruby at the clear rim.
Toasty black fruit with just a hint of that cursed barnyard smell was just passable for me.
The smooth medium-plus body carried silk-like resolved tannin, fair acidity, and flavors of plum, black cherry, and mint.
Finished okay with a touch of the 14.1% alcohol  and sparse black pepper.

Robert Hall Paso Robles 2011 Syrah

Robert Hall Paso Robles 2011 Syrah, $11.69-$23.99 (NHLS promotional gift card applied), 92 points, poured a rainbow of reds, beginning deep ruby at the core trending crushed blackberry shiraz purple/red and near the broad clear rim and leggy glass wall a touch of maroon.
Hints of cherry covered chocolate, blackberry cordial, hibiscus, and warm earth made for a class-act bouquet.
The moderately smooth medium-plus body carried good acidity, mild-plus tannin, and flavors that reflected the bouquet with the addition of a slightly sweet cola note.
Finished long on a spicy white pepper, red licorice, and a well integrated 14.5% alcohol.
Without a doubt one of the best valued red wines I've had all year (High QPR).

Groth Napa Valley 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, $9.00 (NHLS-promotional gift-card applied)-$24.99, 91 points, poured a polished bright bronzed-yellow color trending gray toward the shallow glass wall.
Though the apple/grapefruit aroma was subtle, it was quite good.
Aggressive light bodied Sauvignon Blanc with near austere acidity, high alcohol (14.2%), rather cut and dry white wine that somehow (I'll call it "balanced") works; had a straight-forward flavor profile of vanilla, minerals, and pome.
Finished very long on that alcohol, ginger, a hint of spearmint, and white pepper.

Duckhorn Napa Valley 2013 Sauvignon Blanc

Duckhorn Napa Valley 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, $25.60-$28.99, 92+ points, began a very light brass color trending near water clear.
The aroma was typically wonderful lemon, floral notes, and a hint of watermelon with ripe green melon.
Light-plus body was more crisp than previously tasted vintages, and carried good acidity with a lovely roundness.
Flavors mirrored the nose, finishing with a touch of the 13.5% alcohol, ginger, and some tart citrus.
Varietals were 84% Sauvignon Blanc, 16% Semillon.
Paired very well with my personal clambake!

Stags' Leap Napa Valley 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

Stags' Leap Napa Valley 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, $42.49-$54.99, 93 points, poured core black trending crushed black currant toward the clear rim and leggy glass wall.
Cedar, clove, cinnamon, black cherry, roasted coffee notes, and a floral component made for a lovely bouquet.
Near full-bodied, moderately smooth texture, good acidity, firmly layered tannin, and flavors that mirrored the bouquet affords this Cabernet high marks from me if few others.
Finished long on black fruit, black pepper, and a well integrated 13.9% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my medium rare strip steak.

IL Poggione 2011 Rosso di Montalcino, $22.09-$25.99, 91+ points, poured a bright pomegranate red with some bricking toward the broadly transparent ring at the leggy glass wall.
Floral toasty strawberry aroma was grand.
The medium body carried intense acidity with strident tannins which gave power to the complex flavor profile: oak, red cherry, strawberry, tobacco and coffee notes were well balanced and rich.
Finished very long on accelerating tannin, bourbon, mint, and the tart trailing palate with a well integrated 14% alcohol.
Paired very well with spiced lamb loin chops and green asparagus tips.

Market Basket, Giraffes, and I did NOT buy this wine at Market Basket!

Riebeek Cellars Swartland-South Africa 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, $8.10-$9.00, 86+ points, is a small gesture of support for my friends at the Londonderry Market Basket Super Market. It's been over two weeks since I've been to any Market Basket, because there's no way I'd ignore a boycott where my friends were sticking their necks out and standing there pleading for my support.
This wine (for the record) was bought next door at Hannaford's.
Riebeek Cellars Swartland-South Africa 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, appeared near water clear trending slightly gray with a touch of lemon yellow.
The nose was subtle lemon-zest, honeysuckle, fresh-cut hay, and grapefruit.
Light bodied with fair-plus acidity, a slight spritz, wonderful (though a bit thin) flavors or grapefruit, watermelon, cantaloupe, and kiwi.
Finished well with pepper notes and a hint of the 13.5% alcohol.

Sileni Marlborough 2013 Sauvignon Blanc

Sileni Marlborough 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, $10.99-$12.99, 91 points, appeared a very light brass color trending almost water clear toward the glass wall.
Bright aromas of white grapefruit, lemon grass, and orange blossoms were lovely.
The light crisp body of good acidity and medium Sauvignon Blanc typical texture carried all the good flavor notes of Gooseberries (the aroma notes), and carried those into a long finish with a touch of black pepper and ginger with a hint of the 12.5% alcohol.
This is why Sauvignon Blanc is the Premiere wine of New Zealand.
