Lockhart 2010 Merlot, $9.90-$13.75, 89 points, appears to be a true ruby-red color, as true as any I've seen, and has the diagnostic clear rim of a young red wine.
Earth, sweet cherry, and licorice are aromatic.
Texturally smooth (not as smooth as velvet;-) with a medium-plus body carrying good acidity, fair fine tannin, blackberry and black cherry flavors in a juicy package.
The moderately long finish is the trailing palate with the addition of plum notes and white pepper.
Lockhart 2010 Merlot offers a tremendous quality, price, ratio (QPR) red wine.
Bought at the Londonderry Hannaford's supper market.

Emma Pearl Central Coast 2009 Merlot, $13.99-$16.99, 89 points, is one of those wines that no review or tasting is required to purchase; just look at the label and you can see a "Martha Stewart" decorating a table-setting with it. Yeah, it is on the thin-side of an apron more expensive than your bin-sale Merlot, but when you're playing the role of a "Martha Stewart", you dig a "five" deeper into that purse to impress. Right!
In the glass, the color appears slightly more ruby than pomegranate and is quite clear, but is crowned with only a thin clear rim.
Mildly aromatic, the nose is a sweet red cherry, light cinnamon and cedar, with just a whiff of alcohol (14.5%).
Good acidity and mild tannin are carried by its medium body and a "normally" smooth and textured Merlot.
Flavors of tart red cherry, plum, with hints of smoke and alcohol trail long into a spicy finish.
I was pleasantly surprised by this Merlot, and I would certainly recommend it, but the caveat is that great spice on the finish: some may prefer less of it.
Bought at the Londonderry Shaws super market, but is now available at the NHLSs.

Villa Sandi D.O.C. Prosecco, approximately $10.00, 89 points, begins with a frothy foam head, but quickly settles down; with a clear gray to slightly copper hue, Villa Sandi is a fairly typical Prosecco, and continues its stereo-typical trend with good acidity, light body, mildly effervescent, dry white wine, with an aroma of delicate
light melon, honeydew, and almond.
The crisp texture carries the aroma well into the flavor profile, and finishes nicely with a ginger-like spice.
Paired well with spiced Sea scallops.

Viberti Giovanni Langhe 2010 Nebbiolo, $16,99-$21.99, 87 points, began with a lovely saignée Cabernet red with a clear rim against the glass at the surface.
Subtle floral perfume with a hint of orange zest wafted a faint, though pleasant aroma.
The medium body carried bright acidity and somewhat astringent tannins which were tart and puckering.
Flavors of pomegranate, plum, and flowers made their way through the haze of astringency, and facilitated the palate's transition to the trailing, but somewhat chalky finish.
I'm guessing that this wine could have been cellared for some time, maybe five or more years before drinking.

Notes of earth, glycerol with subtle hints of tobacco and dried-ground coriander make-up the aroma.
Medium bodied wine (100% Tinto Fino/Tempranillo) with bright acidity, mild-plus tannin, juicy to almost jam-like black fruit and licorice, with hints of tobacco and tabasco pepper, especially on the fair-plus finish, complete the structure, texture, and flavor profile of a 'nice' dry red wine.

Château Coufran Merlot Haut-Médoc 2005 Bordeaux,
$20.17-$32.99, is a revisited Bordeaux. Sometimes you hear it said that a wine changes from day to day, but though it has been almost six hundred days since I've tasted this wine, and you'd think that it would have changed more than it has.
Without reviewing my original post, I again tasted the Château Coufran Merlot Haut-Médoc 2005 Bordeaux, and I was surprised by some new notes, but also by just how enduring and stable this wine is; I'm guessing that this wine can sit in the cellar for many years to come.
With much sediment the black currant-blackberry color is still marked by a clear rim.
Improvement in the aroma is noticeable with earth, a toasty mint, and fresh cut hay.
Strident acidity and persistently powerful tannin continue to make this a formidable medium bodied wine and maybe not for the faint of heart, but an excellent food companion.
Flavors of black-berries are rich. There are hints of licorice, plum, and tobacco that I previously did not notice.
Finishing fair, the diminished palate notes culminate weakly with some spice.
My original score of 88 points remains.
