Paired fine with my hors d'oeuvres, mixed nuts, and Cali pistachio squares (brown rice syrup and cane sugar).

Desert Wind Wahluke Slope Washington State "RUAH" Proprietary 2014 Red Wine

Desert Wind Wahluke Slope Washington State "RUAH" Proprietary 2014 Red Wine, $9.34-$21.99, 89 points, poured a Bordeaux purple/red with a broad clear rim and a glass bowl raining sticky thick legs.
The bouquet was a lovely floral and mulling spice potpourri with hints of blueberry and cedar.
Medium-plus bodied, dry, tannic (time should trim), and appropriately acidic red wine delivering a subtle blend of flavors reflective of the bouquet.
Finished long on mulberry and nuanced tobacco, plum, and easy spice notes.
The 14.6% alcohol well complemented this style of wine.

Villa Garducci 2015 Moscato D'Asti Italian White Wine (DOCG),

Villa Garducci 2015 Moscato D'Asti Italian White Wine (DOCG), $5.94-$12.99, 88 points, was mildly frizzante styled (slightly effervescent) with a very light brass color grading clear toward the glass shallows.
My nose caught orange zest and white blossom aromas which were soft and lovely.
Light-bodied made seemingly heavier with fructose sweetness.
Light lime, guava, and pineapple flavors were delicious and harmonious, but the overarching sweetness will not be tolerated by some; I found it a delicious aperitif, and a perfect pairing with my Sichuan cuisine.
Finished on the trailing palate and an innocuous 5.5% alcohol.

Havens Napa Valley "Black And Blue" 2013 Red Wine (Syrah), $16.99-$39.99, 88 points, poured core black grading a deep sienna color toward the clear rim and fat legged glass bowl.
The 'quiet' nose showed mostly dusty blackberry, cedar, and a hint of funk which quickly dissipated.
Medium-plus body with fair acidity and a soft underlayment of tannin managed good flavors of cola, blackberries, mushrooms, red cherry, and red raspberries.
Finished long on the trailing palate, especially the red cherry, easy spice notes, and a formidable 14% alcohol.
Paired well with my Mexican cuisine.

Aromatic black fruit, mulberry, mocha, and sea mist were quite lovely.

Shafer Napa Valley 'TD-9' 2015 Proprietary Red Wine (56% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 16% Malbec), $56.86-$59.99, 94 points, poured core black radiating a deep purple/red at the broad clear rim and leggy glass bowl.
Ripe blackberry, cedar, cocoa, and roses on the nose were excellent.
Full-bodied with good acidity and round supple tannins carried rich flavors of blackberry liqueur, violets, mushrooms, and cola.
Finished long on the cocoa and a warm 15.3% alcohol driven spiciness.

Paired perfectly with my bone-in rare spice-rubbed Angus rib eye.

Shafer, why it's a "go to" winery.

El Coto Rioja 2016 Viura White Wine (Spain)

El Coto Rioja  2016  Viura (also called Macabeo or Macabeu) White Wine (Spain), $10.19-$13.99, 89 points, poured a very light brass color, and was very light on the palate too, with the big spicy kick coming in the long satisfying finish, but this is not a diminution of the pleasant subtle flavors of lemon/lime and pineapple.
The nose was weak, but dusty green melon notes were good, as was the seafood friendly bright acidity.
Well-balanced 12% alcohol added to this wine's table manners as it paired perfectly with my Maryland crab-cakes and wild caught haddock filets.

Two Hands Bella's Garden 2014 Shiraz

Two Hands Bella's Garden 2014 Shiraz, $44.99-$69.99, 92 points, poured black throughout except for a thin outline of purple/red adjacent to the transparent wine ring and heavily draped bowl.
The bella fragranza was a potpourri of flowers and mulling spice with just a kiss of chocolate.
Near full-bodied with good acidity and firm grainy tannins carried flavors reflective of the aromas with plum and mulberry notes.
Finished long on the trailing palate, easy pepper spices, and a rather easy 13.5% alcohol.
Paired well with our Mexican cuisine.

Sweet apple smells with subtle pome blossoms and white raisin were lovely.
Near medium-bodied with fair acidity presented a juicy, tasty, and quaffing white wine; flavors were reflective of the aromas with a hint of pear.
Finished well on whispers of apricot and white pepper with a well-balanced 13.5% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my Patagonia Langostino lobster salad and batter-fried haddock.

Aromatic crème de cassis, black licorice, and black olives were outstanding.
Full-bodied with good acidity and comfortable, grainy, and yet firm tannins managed rich flavors reflective of the aromas plus violets.
Finished very long on the licorice, a hint of plum, cola notes, and warm alcohol (14.5%) inspirited pepper spice.

La Petite Echoppe 2015 Bordeaux Red Wine

La Petite Echoppe 2015 Bordeaux Red Wine, $4.99-$9.99, 87 points, poured an opaque purple/red with a broad clear rim and glass bowl of heavy legs.
Aromatic aromas of chocolate, black fruit, and a hint of cedar were impressive.
Full-bodied with good acidity and a firm underlayment of tannin carried remarkably tasty flavors of plum, mulberry, and chalky chocolate.
Finished fair on the fading palate with mild pepper spice notes enlivened by the big 14.5% alcohol.
Varietals were Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot sourced from various Bordeaux vineyards, but nevertheless was a remarkably good Bordeaux at a remarkable price (high QPR); I'll go out on a limb, and say this just might be the best red wine under $5.00 I've tasted. So if you're a red wine drinker on a budget, buy this Bordeaux by the case while they last.

Zenato delle Venezie 2015 Pinot Grigio (IGT)

Zenato delle Venezie 2015 Pinot Grigio (IGT), $12.99-$14.99, 89 points, was a medium gold color throughout.
Aromas of pome fruit and honeysuckle were soft, but pleasant.
Light-plus body showed good acidity and largely nondescript, but robust flavors of ripe pear, apple notes, and a lovely though edgy whisper of yeast.
Finished long and tangy with citrus and ginger notes with a well-balanced 12.5% alcohol.
Paired fine with my sweet Italian sausage with spinach and parmesan tortellini in an Alfredo sauce over asparagus spears.

Tommasi Delle Venezie Le Rosse 2016 Pinot Grigio (IGT)

Tommasi Delle Venezie Le Rosse 2016 Pinot Grigio (IGT), $14.99-$16.99, 88 points, poured a light gold color grading clear quickly toward the glass shallows.
The aromas were rather 'dumb' with barely a hint of green melon and a nondescript floral vibe.
Light-bodied with good acidity, in contrast to the aromas, showed robust flavors of lemon/lime with traces of kiwi and honeydew melon.
Finished well on the fading palate with hints of ginger and a very relaxed 12% alcohol.
This Italian white wine paired fine with Spanish sardines and Greek lemon soup.

Antica Masseria di Sigillo 2014 Primitivo di Manduria, Puglia, Italy, $9.99-$19.99, 91 points, is hands down the best Italian Zinfandel I've tasted, and at this price is the sizzler to seize.
Poured broadly black with a gradual ruby umbra toward the clear rim and heavily draped glass bowl.
Aromatic mulberry, ripe summer blackberry, and earth with just a hint of pine tar were excellent.
Near full-bodied with good acidity and sweet round tannins carried the bouquet rightly onto the palate.
Finished long and juicy with easy pepper spices, a hint of pomegranate, and a warm 14.5% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my Mexican cuisine.

Cecchi La Mora Maremma Toscana 2016 Vermentino

Cecchi La Mora Maremma Toscana 2016 Vermentino, $13,59-$15.99, 89 points, poured a pale yellow/green color clearing at the glass edge.
Smells of fresh-cut-grass with a hint of kiwi and a white flower vibe were especially pleasant when the Vermentino was cold.
The body was a wee-bit weightier than light and showed good acidity; flavors of tropical fruits with a hint of pear were generous.
Finished long on the trailing palate, another wee-bit of grass and fruit, a sprinkle of ginger dust, and a sufficient 13% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my Massachusetts clam chowder.
Since I was ól this wine on Saint Patrick's Day I have paraphrased an Irish proverb: The love of a good wine guides every palate.
Sláinte!

2018, 90 point wines

2018, 90 point wines (166 at last count), many under $20 (several wines under $10) are racking-up deep into November, when I will post my best-picks for the year: Top 2018 Wines (18)
Why the 90 point hubbub bub? Have you been disappointed in a wine you’ve plunked down your hard earned pesos? Are you in a wine rut, always the same wine because you trust its history? Let's see if my selections can't help with that.
I work hard at judging the wines I drink, because my family and friends trust me when I say “this is a great wine!"
It’s important that you know what ‘type’ or style of wine you do like and don’t like, and sometimes we just don’t really know, but comparing a soft, jammy, and lush Apothic red, for example, to a distinctive food busting, medium-bodied, and acidic Italian Sangiovese (think Chianti) will quickly give you a clue to your palate's preference in a red wine.
Or consider, like I often do, an oaky Cali Chardonnay with that of a clean mineral tasting Chablis (Chardonnay from northern Burgundy, France) and everything in between, because there exists a wide and often unappreciated difference; Chardonnay is often referred to as "the winemaker's grape".
A 90 point wine can assist in exploring wines and often lead to the “ah ha moment”, otherwise known as an epiphany, when, like my son, a wine best paired, is a wine nearly divine.
An 80 point wine vs. a 90 point wine can be the difference between a White Castle burger and one from the 80 Thoreau’s bar.
Feel free to add your thoughts on the 100 point system; if you're on the negative side of the issue, first see my post on that subject here:
So why do so many hate wine. . .scores. . .

If you have any comments on the wines mentioned below, I'll be glad to entertain them.
