Paul Jaboulet Aîné Côtes du Rhône Parallèle “45” 2009 Red Wine

Paul Jaboulet Aîné Côtes du Rhône Parallèle “45” 2009 Red Wine, (60% Grenache-40% Syrah) $8.49-$14.99, 86 points, began in the glass an opaque ruby trending rosewood to the broad transparent rim.
Earth and a floral note with teased blackberry on the nose was pleasant.
Medium body carried fair acidity and tannin along with a somewhat thin though good flavor profile of plum, boysenberry, blackberry, and hints of roasted coffee.
Sorry, I didn't pick-up on any red fruit despite the photograph.
Finished fair with spice notes and a touch of the 14% alcohol.
Quality to price ratio (QPR) magnifies this red wine's value as a table wine, one I'd would definitely be proud to serve.

Bearboat Russian River 2010 Syrah

Bearboat Russian River 2010 Syrah,
$8.49-$19.99, 89 points, appeared purple/red with a slight pink hue and a thin clear rim.
I sensed a lovely roasted coffee, orange peel, and blueberry on the nose, but the back label says "red raspberry and toasty vanilla".
Medium bodied with good acidity and moderate tannin carried the good flavors of the aromas with tart plum.
Finished long with just a touch of the 13.8 alcohol, white pepper, and cola.
Lovely easy drinking red wine should pair well with lightly spiced foods, mellow sauces, and corn fed beef (great deal at the NH liquor outlet power-buy price). Drinks well by itself too.

Forenzo Mendocino County 2012 Zinfandel

Forenzo Mendocino County 2012 Zinfandel, $15.29-$19.99, 86 points, appeared deep ruby trended a bright pomegranate red toward a very broad clear ring at the leggy glass wall.
Lots of sweet red fruit, strawberry and sweet red cherry with watermelon and earth on the nose were profuse (contrary to the back label).
Medium body carried bright acidity and moderate-plus tannin onto the palate with excited vigor and flavors of strawberry and caramel which trailed into the very long finish that snowballed spice and some heat (14.9% alcohol).

Yauquen 2011 Bonarda socks it to Fredric Koeppel; again!

Yauquen 2011 Bonarda, $6.75-$12.99, 87 points, appeared a slightly milky (soft) Concord grape purple with a thin clear circumferential rim, and trended near black at the core.
Teasing out sweet red cherry, toasty plum, and purple grape smells required considerable swishing and swirling, but the rewards were worth it.
Near full-bodied with vivid acidity and surprisingly sharp and persistent tannin, which I liked, others may not, but they gave backbone to what might otherwise have been a boring wine.
Flavors of coffee, oak, and black fruit were racy even though a bit syrupy late palate, but still good.
Finished on a trailing palate marked by tannin accelerating the spice notes with a hint of the 13.3% alcohol.
This red wine will pair well with beef, but should make for a good red table wine (not for the mellow Merlot lover) with a high QPR.

Château Lafon-Rochet Saint-Estèphe Cru Classé 2010 Bordeaux Red Wine

La beauté de Bordeaux vin rouge!

Château Lafon-Rochet Saint-Estèphe Cru Classé 2010 Bordeaux Red Wine,  $70.54-$82.99, 94 points, was an impenetrable black currant color almost until the leggy glass wall with a transparent rim.
Although the aromatics were subtle, the fragrance of lilac, coffee, clove, earth, with hints of black fruit were delightful.
Early palate smooth, the medium-plus body quickly transitioned with more than noticeable, but manageable tannin
and excellent acidity. Though this wine will develop for many years, it is definitely pleasant now.
There's an abundance of dried herb flavors added to those experienced from the aroma, and the complexity of black fruit with anise were remarkable.
Finished quite long on the trailing palate with truffle, Asian spice, and some heat (14% alcohol).
Varietals are 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and the rest are Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Kungfu Girl Washington State 2012 Riesling

Kungfu Girl Riesling smakar perfekt med skaldjur!

Kungfu Girl Washington State 2012 Riesling, $11.89-$13.99, 90 points, was a light brass color, aromatically citrus with honeysuckle notes, light-plus moderately smooth bodied, off-dry, with mouth watering acidity, very flavorful and drinkable, with hibiscus, citrus, a very mellow pink grapefruit, and a trailing palate into the fair finish with just a hint of ginger and the 11% alcohol.

Oxford Landing Estates 2012 Shiraz

Oxford Landing Estates 2012 Shiraz,  $10.80-$16.00 86 points, appeared bright opaque ruby trending more burgundy-red than Shiraz purple, and having a broad clear rim.
Sweet red fruit and spring-clothesline-dried-cleaned-linen on the nose were pleasant and brought back childhood memories.
The body just managed a marginally medium, and carried good acidity and mild tannin on an almost spritz-like texture.
Flavors of strawberry, sweet red cherry, and eucalyptus were good, and trailed long into the finish with just a hint of coffee, spice, and the 13.5% alcohol.
I've begun to list a number of wines that resembled this one, and the odd thing is that they can cross varietal lines yet remain almost undistinguishable from each other. As I see it, the vinification process can to a greater or less degree over-ride varietal character.
I bought this Shiraz at the Londonderry Hannaford's Supermarket.

Juan Gil 2010 Jumilla Red Wine

Juan Gil 2010 Jumilla Red Wine, $17.10-$22,99, 91 points, 100% Monastrell red wine, began draping the glass with sheets of wine clinging to the glass wall and tapering to the broadly transparent rim; overall the wine appeared a deep purple/red.
The profuse and distinctive aroma displayed candied red cherry, black currant, earth, and a whiff of alcohol.
Medium-plus bodied with good acidity and moderate-plus tannin carried rich flavors of coffee, tobacco, briar-like blackberry, sage, and licorice into a long finish of spice, eucalyptus, with some heat (15% alcohol).
This was another great find at the Londonderry Hannaford's Supermarket.

Wine Week (My perspective)

Wine Week is upon New Hampshire, and though the weather is near zero degrees cold (The California representatives will better appreciate sunny Cali), the "buzz" and the red wine is heating things up to a boil.
I'm not a crowd person, and my intimate enjoyment of wine requires what I call "cradling" a wine (getting to know "you" kind of thing that can take up to three days). However impractical that is, I understand that wine is business, and the festive aspects appeal to many, all the while understanding the event's importance: I'm not wanting to diminish any of those things.
So, if I was going to these wine tasting events, I would want to first confine myself to those few special wines I really want to get to know, and I'm one of those people that thinks that swallowing a wine is an important aspect in evaluating a wine, which at a customary wine tasting event isn't possible (putting wine in your mouth though, does cause some alcohol to be absorbed into your blood stream-even if you don't swallow), because soon I (you) will be drunk.
After really tasting a few special wines (don't forget to drink copious amounts of water, have a little food before tasting, and have some palate cleansers during the wine tasting, crackers, bread, and maybe a mild cheese), then, after the special wines have been tasted, at that time and considering my condition, I just might flutter like a butterfly about some of the lesser wines.
I would not use any perfumes that will distract (remember smelling a wine is important).
I'd also have a "designated driver", a cab, or other transportation arranged ahead of time. Being prepared would make my wine tasting festival mucho fun and maybe productive.
Oh, remember to go with friends, and that the festive atmosphere will influence your judgment of wine; just a couple of thoughts to consider!

Altos Del Cuco Jumilla 2011 Red Wine

Altos Del Cuco Jumilla 2011 Red Wine, $9.90-$13.75, 90 points, appeared with a thin clear circumferential rim with rosewood-red quickly transitioning opaque purple/red all the way to the core.
If an aroma was ever tactile, this Red wine certainly was, with soft floral notes, gentle strawberry, striking rich blackberry, and waking coffee notes: very deep and mysterious.
Near full bodied and nearly a perfect red table wine with good acidity and moderate tannin.
In addition to the flavors having mirrored the aroma, there were tobacco and plum notes that trailed into the juicy finish with hints of spice and the 13.5% alcohol.
Varietals are 40% Monastrell, 30% Syrah, and 30% Tempranillo.
Another great wine bought at Hannaford's Supermarket in Londonderry.

Norton, Mendoza 2010 Reserva Malbec

Norton, Mendoza 2010 Reserva Malbec,  $16.14-$20.99, 89 points (consider WE's score on the label), appeared an opaque Concord grape purple trending lighter in color up to the clear rim and leggy glass wall.
A slight toasty blackberry aroma with a gentle perfume note needed considerable teasing.
Near full bodied with bright acidity and moderately smooth tannin carried considerable licorice and  damson plum onto the palate with just a hint of tobacco.
Finished fair and flavorful with the trailing palate, a light white pepper, and a some heat (14.5% alcohol), but also a bit of astringency.

Tom Eddy Napa Valley 2008 Malbec

Tom Eddy Napa Valley 2008 Malbec, $46.99-$64.99, 91 points, appeared inky black all the way to the crushed black currant purple/red leggy glass wall, where it was ringed silver-clear at the circumference.
The powerful aroma of black-cherry cordial, plum, earth, cedar, tobacco, and a light floral note were important as the flavor profile mirrored the aroma faithfully
Full bodied with lip-smacking acidity with a mouth puckering tannin which, though prominent and oxymoronic, was layered and not overwhelming, but intensified the finish of cayenne and black pepper with considerable heat (14.9% alcohol) and earthy plum.

Charles Fournier Gold Seal Vineyards Finger Lakes 2012 Riesling

Charles Fournier Gold Seal Vineyards Finger Lakes 2012 Riesling, $12.74-$14.99, 87 points, appeared a very pale brass color.
Dry white wine with a lemon/lime aroma that was a bit one dimensional.
Light bodied with bright acidity and flavors that mildly mirrored the aroma with a hint of honeysuckle, but finished strong with ginger notes, warm-rained-on-granite, and tart tangerine.
Paired well with steamers and Asian cuisine.

PAPA'S ALL~BLACKS North Coast Old Vines 2011 Red Wine

PAPA'S ALL~BLACKS North Coast Old Vines 2011 Red Wine, $25.49-$29.99, 90 points, began on the glass wall rather leggy with a thin clear rim, and trended an opaque Concord grape purple with a pink hue.
Possessed a subtle, but pleasant nose of toasty blackberry, coffee, and cedar.
Near full-bodied with bright acidity and moderate tannin which carried Zinfandel-like black fruit onto the palate with a floral note, but a bit astringent.
Finished long with blackberry cordial, cayenne, tart Marionberry, and hint of the 14% alcohol.

Château Doisy-Daëne 2010 Grand Vin De Barsac

Château Doisy-Daëne 2010 Grand Vin De Barsac, $62.89-$73.99, 93 points, appeared as a light brass color.
Profusely aromatic with pine resin, fresh baked bread, tangerine, cantaloupe, and honey.
Full bodied (viscous) with sufficient acidity to cut through a baked-stuffed lobster and key-lime pie.
I preferred this wine after it breathed for some time, and though the flavors were tamed a bit, a creamy honey quality supplanted the more early vigorous citrus and melon flavors.
Finished extremely long with just hints of ginger, black pepper, lemon-meringue, and the 13.5% alcohol.
The varietals of 89% Sémillon, 11% Sauvignon Blanc were better (to me) as an aperitif than they were being paired with diner, but either way Doisy-Daëne was an elegant taste experience.

Zerran D.O. Montsant 2011 Red Wine

Zerran D.O. Montsant 2011 Red Wine, $13.50-$15.00, 90 points, appeared a deep near opaque purple with a pink hue, but not quite as purple as a Shiraz, and had a broad transparent rim.
Beautiful aroma with clove, cedar, flowers, and (as Ben pointed out) just a hint of Granny Smith apple.
Full bodied with sharp acidity and intense tannin.
A bounty of flavors with coffee, tobacco, briar-blackberry, plum, and a true reflection of the aroma.
Finished quite long on the trailing palate with intense spice and a touch of the 14% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with a Philly cheese steak.
Varietals are 50% Garnacha, 40% Mazuello or Carignan (Jancis Robinson explains), and 10% Syrah.
This is a high QPR-Quality/Price/Ratio red wine (typical for Spanish Red) which I bought at the Londonderry Hannaford's Supermarket.

浅白色的酒,与亚洲美食完美的作品。
Kungfu Girl Washington State 2011 Riesling, $11.89-$13.99, 89 points, appeared a very light brass yellow.
This dry white wine's aroma of light petrol, apple blossom, and grapefruit foreshadowed the crisp light body with its lip-smacking acidity which carried flavors of tart grapefruit, petrol, and mineral notes throughout the palate and into the very long finish with accelerating ginger notes and a hint of the 11% alcohol.

Quickfire Dry Creek Valley 2008 Zinfandel

Quickfire Dry Creek Valley 2008 Zinfandel, $7.64-$18.99, 90 points, began in the glass an opaque burgundy red trending bright pomegranate toward a broad clear circumferential rim.
Toasty blackberries on the nose with just a hint of sweet plum, cedar, earth, and violets were very good.
Near full bodied with ample acidity and tannin.
Flavors mirrored the aroma faithfully, but just a hint of tart cranberry added some relief to this rather mellow Zinfandel.
Finished long on white and cayenne pepper with just a touch of restrained heat (14.2% alcohol).
Value-wise, this has to be one of the top QPR red wines I've had, and having a good balance: not too dry or too fruity, with a very good overall flavor, not too high on the alcohol, but just about right, makes this a perfect barbecue or red table wine.

Clayhouse Paso Robles 2008 Malbec

Clayhouse Paso Robles 2008 Malbec,  $10.99-$15.99, 86 points, appeared with draping sheets of crushed blackberry purple on the glass wall above a clear rim toward an opaque core.
Fennel, plum, and coffee on the nose were interesting though not particularly fragrant.
The near full body carried fair acidity and mild tannin with plum, pomegranate, and an almost molasses flavor.
Finished long on an accelerating spice, licorice, sour currant, and a hint of the 13.5% alcohol.
This is a satisfactory red table wine, and paired well with my rare Porterhouse steak.

tikal Amorio Mendoza Argentina 2008 Malbec, $22.09-$25.99, 92 points, began in the glass just shy of black trending a Concord grape purple up to the clear rim.
Aromatic warm earth, plum, cinnamon, and cedar were rich and pleasant.
The full body having good acidity and moderate tannin carried the aroma faithfully onto the palate with good cola and coffee notes.
Finished very long on nearly explosive spice (not universally noticed), violets, and some enhancement via the 14% alcohol.

Malbec, Perfected in South America

Malbec, one of the six grape varietals found in Bordeaux red wines, however it is most often associated with a plethora of great to poor red wines from Argentina and to a lesser extent Chile, notwithstanding California's, South Africa's, and Australia's (not a complete list) blending of the grape with other red varietals, and even some straight Malbec production.
When I think of Malbec, I think of the flavor-kinship to Syrah and Zinfandel. I also think of Malbec wines (not reviewed) I tasted early in my wine tasting experience that I just didn't like, and which steered me away from them, but with my son's new enjoyment of Malbec I was bound to taste more of them, and thankfully so.
In New Hampshire you'll find plenty of Malbec wines to choose from ($6-$60), but about 95% will be from Argentina with a half dozen or so from Chile.

My list of Malbec wines:

90+ Old Vines 2012 Malbec, $9.99, 85 points (not reviewed)
Achaval Ferrer Mendoza 2010 Malbec, (Argentina) $19.54-$22.99, 91 points
Achaval Ferrer Mendoza 2012 Malbec, $16.14-$22.99, 90 points
Achaval Ferrer Mendoza 2014 Malbec, $16.14-$22.99, 90 points

Luca Mendoza Argentina 2008 Malbec

Luca Mendoza Argentina 2008 Malbec,
$28.04-$32.99, 90 points, appeared black to inky purple with a broad transparent rim.
The earthy aroma had hints of violets and plum, but otherwise was nearly "dumb".
Near full bodied with moderate acidity and tannin, robust plum flavors with licorice, a hint of tobacco, and finished quite long on spice, tart pomegranate, with a hint of the 14% alcohol.

Aromatic spring water with cinnamon, clove, and sweet floral cherry were quite good on the nose.
The medium-plus body carried good acidity and moderate tannin with flavors that mirrored the aroma, but added plum and blackberry notes.
Finished fair with some tart pomegranate, spice, and the warmth of the 14.8% alcohol.

Cigar Box Reserve 2012 Malbec, $11.99-$13.99, 87 points, appeared opaque ruby trending black currant purple/red with a broad clear rim.
A profuse aroma issued flowers, toasty plum, earth, and heavy black grape smells.
The near full body was smooth, juicy, and carried fair acidity, mild-plus tannin, interesting flavors of black olive, tobacco, blackberry, and black grape notes.
Finished fair with susficient spice, a touch of the 14.1% alcohol, and eucalyptus.
I can see why my nephew Rob likes and recommends this Malbec as his go-to red wine.

Well, I have every intention of tasting and reviewing these red wines with family and friends over the next two days, and by doing so I hope to keep warmer than those teetotalers wagging their fingers in my face while they come down with hypothermia and frost-bite!
Cheers to my family and friends, and I've just made a  spinach peta to go with it. So Ben from Sweden, get your___over here, and Ethan (Chef), you too! Bring Kelsey!

DR Loosen Bros. Mosel 2012 Riesling

DR Loosen Bros. Mosel 2012 Riesling,  $10.19-$14.99, 90 points.
Had a lovely burnished brass color.
Honeysuckle, a hint of vanilla, and citrus on the nose were lovely.
Nice balance between sweet and tart apple flavors carried on a light-plus body; flavors that were clean and gave a slight sense of its mineral elements with good acidity.
Finished well with a hint of ginger, lemon, and the 8.5% alcohol.

Château Monbousquet St. Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2010 Bordeaux

Château Monbousquet St. Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2010 Bordeaux, $63.74-$74.99, 94 points, needed to be decanted, having some debris within its black Tannat-like color which trended a deep rosewood red toward a leggy glass wall with a transparent rim.
Compared to the 2009 vintage, the aroma was quiet with some flowers, earth, coffee, cardamom, and black fruit being teased out with swishing and swirling.
Full bodied, this is an immense red wine, and not for the faint of heart, at least not in this decade. Good acidity was captivated with early powerful and persistent tannin.
Blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry, flavors were rounded-off with interesting eucalyptus, coffee, and tobacco notes.
Finished very long on the trailing palate with considerable heat (14.5% alcohol) and cayenne spice.
The varietals are 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The price was about $13 more than the 2009 vintage.
I found that this wine overwhelmed my spiced lamb rib-chops, but was better with lasagna, and an absolute wonder with chocolate!

Schlink Haus Auslese 2011 White Wine (Germany)

Schlink Haus Auslese 2011 White Wine (Germany), $8.81-$13.99, 84 points, appeared brightly light gold in color.
Green melon rind with hints of grapefruit, perfume, and petrol on the nose struggled to elevate the aroma, one that improved with air.
Grapefruit and tangerine flavors were okay, but seemed to overwhelm more subtle flavors, and was just too sweet for this white wine and for me.
Near medium body carried mouth watering acidity, but the finish managed only to represent the trailing palate without accent, while the 10.5% alcohol was almost unnoticeable.
Varietals were  Riesling, Muller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and Scheurebe. .
