Renwood Amador County Premire 2011 Old Vine Zinfandel, $15.99-$19.99, 90 points, poured opaque transitioning to brick-red toward the broad clear rim-ring and leggy glass wall.
Smells of dusty blackberries, black licorice, coffee notes, and earth were propitious.
The medium-plus body with firm tannin carried unusual flavors of cola, bourbon, and those flavors reflective of the well defined aromas.
Finished fair on the trailing palate with some red pepper notes and warmth from the sweet-spot 14.8% alcohol.
It has been four years since I got over my displeasure with Renwood Zinfandel, and I'm glad I got over that displeasure and tasted the 2011 vintage; though I haven't tasted that many Zins of late, I'll bet that this is a best value. I think this wine is at its apex: drink now!

Zin and chili season is nearly upon us, must start getting a selection in. Apparently Clif Family (as in the energy bars) Zin is very good.
ReplyDeleteVG: It is very hard for me to find new Zins to taste, but reliable Ridge, Frog's Leap, Grgich, etc will probably have to do.
