Bogle Old Vine 2009 Essential Red Wine

Bogle Vineyards Old Vine 2009 Essential Red Wine, $9.99-$13.99, 90 points is a deep and dark Burgundy red in color, with a broad transparent rim.
The aroma is a wonderful blend of cherry, spice (carries over throughout the tasting experience and is magnified on the finish), and freshly turned earth.
Rich smoky dark boysenberries and black cherry are carried along with good acidity and noticeable tannin which gives structure to this nearly full bodied red wine.
With all the expensive red wines available in New Hampshire, many of which are big bargains even at $30.00, most shoppers I talk to are in the below $10.00 market, well, my friends and family, this is your red wine. I've reviewed some below $10.00 red wines that are good at that price, but Bogle Essential Red, so far, is the best of that category.
Having an interesting blend of Old Vine Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Syrah, this red wine has so much more finesses than the trendy Apothic red wine that my friend Judy is gaga over, provided that the Old Vine Zinfandel spice with a hint of tobacco on the  finish, doesn't overwhelm you.

  1. I haven't seen this one. Is this a new offering from them? I've been a big fan of their "Phantom" blend for a while now (even if the last couple of vintages have seen a little bit of a slip), but this one is new to me. I'll definitely keep an eye out for it.

I'm kind of over the Apothic Red. I was excited when I saw some in St. Louis last Christmas and bought 6 just because. I've enjoyed it with burgers and BBQ, but it really comes across as being too sweet to me now. I can see why it's a big favorite among the casual wine drinker.

If this "Essential Red" is a less sweet version of Apothic, then it might just have to become my new everyday $10 red. I'll certainly let you know when I get around to trying it.

    1. Bill, I'm not a fan of the Apothic Red (Too syrupy on first tasting, will try again), but this is the first Bogle I've tried, even though my cellar must have at least 6 or 7 assorted bottles dating back up to three years (I would be interested in knowing which "Phantom" was your favorite vintage?); I just haven't gotten around to tasting them. having tasted a few very good Reds lately, I must admit I was impressed with the Essential red. The Zin influence was very noticeable, and since I'm a Zin-kind-of-guy, I think that spiciness did the trick.

  2. Haven't tried the AR or the Essential, but I've always enjoyed their Petite Syrah for the price point.
