Château Monbousquet St. Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2010 Bordeaux

Château Monbousquet St. Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2010 Bordeaux, $63.74-$74.99, 94 points, needed to be decanted, having some debris within its black Tannat-like color which trended a deep rosewood red toward a leggy glass wall with a transparent rim.
Compared to the 2009 vintage, the aroma was quiet with some flowers, earth, coffee, cardamom, and black fruit being teased out with swishing and swirling.
Full bodied, this is an immense red wine, and not for the faint of heart, at least not in this decade. Good acidity was captivated with early powerful and persistent tannin.
Blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry, flavors were rounded-off with interesting eucalyptus, coffee, and tobacco notes.
Finished very long on the trailing palate with considerable heat (14.5% alcohol) and cayenne spice.
The varietals are 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The price was about $13 more than the 2009 vintage.
I found that this wine overwhelmed my spiced lamb rib-chops, but was better with lasagna, and an absolute wonder with chocolate!

  1. D, what kind of chocolate? I'm assuming dark, like 72% or something.

    1. John, you certainly make this fun! I had a plate with several types, dark of various %s of cocoa, some with hazel nuts, some made in Spain and others in Belgium or Germany.
I might be wrong about this, but just as a good Port pairs well with chocolate, at this stage in the Château Monbousquet's evolution being so powerful, it too paired well.
