Tabarrini Montefalco Sagrantino 2007 Campo Alla Cerqua, approximately $50, and bought through the mail.
Scored 92 points.
Appeared similar to a Tannat black, but trended sunburst orange red toward the transparent rim.
The aroma was mostly leather and earth with a floral note.
Full bodied with high acidity and strident tannin that carried deep into the long finish.
Flavors of black fruit were verdant and potent while anise, dried bay leaf, and tobacco added complexity.
Long on a mightily spicy finish with mint, eucalyptus, and considerable heat (15% alcohol) climaxed this rather intense bone dry red wine.

I love this wine. I simply am bewildered by the dusty feel of all those tannins. Like any Sagrantino, the wine is huge. It needs substantial meat and/or cellar time but these things just may out live me and you. This is the most elegant of the three. Giampaolo Tabarrini is a great winemaker and a nice man. His energy is boundless. I look foward to seeing some of your other notes.
ReplyDeleteJohn, just in case you didn't remember that I reviewed and loved the 2006 Colle Alle Macchie http://nhwineman.blogspot.com/2012/10/tabarrini-montefalco-sagrantino-2006.html, but the Campo just didn't impress me as much, though 92 points is an excellent score!
