Banfi Castello 2007 Brunello DI Montalcino

Banfi Castello 2007 Brunello DI Montalcino, $49.29-$62.99, 92 points, begins light and bright in the glass; the cranberry to burgundy color terminates transparent at the rim.
The nose was asleep; even with considerable swishing and swirling the slumber was tenacious, but finally some hints of sweet cooking spice and tobacco became apparent.
Flavors of mild red fruit, especially strawberry, were warm and delicate, but the fortunate finish culminated a rather weak effort for a Brunello; the medium body of good acidity and moderate tannin found its footing in a trailing palate, a touch of heat (14.5% alcohol), and a long lasting spiciness.

  1. This note mirrors mine, especially the part about the wine being completely asleep on the nose. After about 90 minutes it had perked up considerably. Among the more closed 2007's I've had. The palate was considerably better too. I think it just needed air. Will be curious to see how these evolve over the next 3-5 years.

    1. John, thanks for your response; I'll have to go back and take a peak at your comments on the 2007; the flavor was good, but short of what I'd expect, and your thoughts about waiting are approprate.

    1. No thank you guys.
John, my computer crashed and I'm just setting-up a new one, so I'm a little set-back on keeping up with things, but I'll be more involved as time and training permit.

  3. Bummer Dennis. It's amazing though, how dependent we are on the things! If anything else, don't miss tomorrow's article on the SlowWine VinItaly tasting I just attended. It'll be comprehensive to say the least.

    Ciao.
