O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon

O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, $76.49-$89.99, 95 points, poured inky black until midnight met the daylight of the crystal-clear wine ring and its blood-red margin.
Once again O'Shaughnessy provides a feast for the nose with a bounty of flowers, fruits, nuanced milling spices, and cedar wafting both itself and the smeller heavenward.
Full-bodied with good acidity and ultra-smooth firm grainy tannins managed the juiciest ripe blackberries I could imagine, anise, mint, and toasty black currants.
Finished long on the trailing palate, tangy pomegranate, plum, tobacco notes, warm spices, and a well-balanced 14.8% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my traditional strip-steak dinner.

  1. It's been about three years since I've had one of these, and what crosses my mind is this: Why haven't I had more? And costing about $10 more in three years didn't change the QPR a bit!

  2. Betty O'Shaughnessy is also a great grower (Howell Mountain, Oakville, and Mayacamas, I think).

  3. VG: Cult wine for a less than a cult price! I hate this expression, but here it works: Win/win!

  4. Nothing beats O'Shaughnessy in terms of cost vs quality. Love their wines! Howell Mountsin expression at its best!
