Bonny Doon Vineyard "A Proper Claret" 2014 Red Wine, $10.99-$16.99, 89 points, poured a deep red raspberry color with stained glass sheeting and a bright thin meniscus.
Smells were a bit plumy with hints of cedar, soft perfumed floral notes, and briar black fruit.
Medium-bodied (a bit coarse) red wine with good acidity, a firm plank of tannin, and a very complex flavor profile of loam, grape skins, red and black raspberry, tar, and a hint of marjoram.
Finished herbal, peppery, meaty, with red licorice and a modest 13.2% alcohol.
Varietals were 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Petit Verdot, 23% Tannat, 8% Merlot, 3%Syrah, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petite Sirah.
An unusual red wine where the uniqueness of the Tannat took front and center stage, though lighter than the Tannat wines I've had.
Serve as you would with any red wine; I recommend pairing with beef, Mexican cuisine, and pizza.
