Anton Bauer Gmirk 2017 Grüner Veltliner (Wagram/Austria)






Anton Bauer Gmirk 2017 Grüner Veltliner (Wagram/Austria), $13.50-$14.99, 89 points, was an exceptionally light brass color throughout.
Aromatic with light lemon meringue and pome floral notes.
Light-bodied (dry) white wine with appropriate acidity and straight-forward delicious citrus and melon flavors.
Finished long on the trailing palate, melon rind, ginger, and a well-balanced 12% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my battered deep-fried Halibut filets.

Anton Bauer Wagram/Österreich (Austrian) 2008 Pinot Noir

 
 

Anton Bauer Wagram/Österreich (Austrian) 2008 Pinot Noir, $8.29-$19.99, 89 points, appears as a brilliant ruby trending near burgundy red toward a somewhat leggy broad clear rim.
Maybe the most unusual toasty clove/cinnamon spice nose of all the Pinot Noir wines in this series.
Near medium bodied with moderate acidity and tannin counter intuitively suggest a more lively red wine, almost like a light floral Chianti rather than a smooth delicate cherry nuanced Pinot Noir, but with a borderline spritz-strawberry flavor and loads of violets throughout the palate; I doubt I'd identify this one in a blind tasting.
Finishing with a lively spice and light 13% alcohol completes a surprising good wine.

Austrian Wines


  Austrian Wines are a bit hard to find in New Hampshire, but every once in a while one will pop-up and I'll grab it off the shelf. Though my list is small, I welcome comments, especially those comments adding to Austrian wines found in NH.
  Typically I offer a link introducing a country's wines, but in this case I didn't think what I could find apropos to my purposes; I don't pretend to be an expert on Austria or its wines.
  As is my style, I buy wine in NH to be relevant and specific here (NHWM), if a wine is bought at the NHLS-Outlets it's assumed without stating; most of my wines are bought at one of their more than fifty stores, and if wines are bought at another venue, I mention that.

Pinot Noir and Autumn is here!



With the colors and smells of Autumn arriving, you know that the "River of No Return" is advancing unrelentingly toward Halloween and Thanksgiving. This Fall, I'm determined to taste as many Pinot Noir wines as I can, so as to make an effort to recommend some of these most versatile red wines to New Hampshire wine shoppers for Thanksgiving, and though other red wines will do, Zinfandel for instance, Pinot Noir will probable edge-out the other "Reds" in pairing for typical Thanksgiving cuisine.
If you can't wait, here's my current list of Pinot Noir wines already tasted:
Pinot Noir (USA), Pinot Noir (French), two from New Zealand: O'Reilly's 2009 Pinot Noir, and Brancott Estate Marlborough 2011 Pinot Noir, plus one PN from Australia: Yering Station 2007 PN.
Newly tasted two PNs from Germany: Weingut Bernhard Huber Malterdinger Trocken 2009er Pinot Noir, Baden, and Neipperger Schlossberg 2010 Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), $28.04-$32.99, 90+ points (Germany).

Thanksgiving In New Hampshire-- Best Pinot Noir Wines Tasted For 2013



 is my choice for best Quality/Price/Ratio Pinot Noir for 2013.







Best Pinot Noir Wines Tasted For Thanksgiving In New Hampshire was going to include one best value wine, and one "best of show" to impress, but I'm changing that by adding the category of best regional (AVA) Pinot Noir wines.

It is important to understand that my choices were something like 60% subjective and because Burgundy (French) Pinot Noir wines were too expensive as a whole, and some others were just too hard to find, i.e. Anton Bauer Wagram/Österreich (Austrian) 2008 Pinot Noir which was high on my list, in some sense disqualified them from my highest ranking.

As for my choice of Riesling, I have to cop-out, because Riesling is one of those consistently good and inexpensive wines, whether from California, Finger Lakes, or Columbia Valley, but just maybe EROICA Riesling was the best!
Chardonnay? See my next post which will lead me into Christmas wine tasting!
