Two old Chardonnay wines under $10.00!
Tamaya Limari Valley, Chile 2009 Chardonnay Reserva, 86 points, was a deep straw yellow/gold color.
Aromas of dry-cured hay and unripe cantaloupe were interesting if not exciting.
Medium-bodied white wine with fair acidity and showing some apple and melon fruit which was carried into the fair finish marked by a trace ginger note and a spot-on 13.5% alcohol.
Badger Mountain Columbia Valley, Washington 2008 Chardonnay, 85 points, was a dark copper Sauternes gold color.
Aromas of strong fennel and apple cider were fascinating, but a bit unusual for me.
Near full-bodied with soft acidity and flavors that mimicked the aromas; I wasn't enamored with either of these wines at this age, but I didn't dislike them.
This Chardonnay finished uneventfully on an 11% alcohol.
Both wines were paired with fried chicken, and the Tamaya was a better match.
Obviously the Tamaya weathered time better, though it was one year younger.
