Two old Chardonnay wines under $10.00!

Two old Chardonnay wines under $10.00!

Tamaya Limari Valley, Chile 2009 Chardonnay Reserva, 86 points, was a deep straw yellow/gold color.
Aromas of dry-cured hay and unripe cantaloupe were interesting if not exciting.
Medium-bodied white wine with fair acidity and showing some apple and melon fruit which was carried  into the fair finish marked by a trace ginger note and a spot-on 13.5% alcohol.

Badger Mountain Columbia Valley, Washington 2008 Chardonnay, 85 points, was a dark copper Sauternes gold color.
Aromas of strong fennel and apple cider were fascinating, but a bit unusual for me.
Near full-bodied with soft acidity and flavors that mimicked the aromas; I wasn't enamored with either of these wines at this age, but  I didn't dislike them.
This Chardonnay finished uneventfully on an 11% alcohol.

Both wines were paired with fried chicken, and the Tamaya was a better match.
Obviously the Tamaya weathered time better, though it was one year younger.

Antonin Rodet Mâcon-Igé Thuzot 2016 Mercurey (Burgundy) Chardonnay

Antonin Rodet Mâcon-Igé Thuzot 2016 Mercurey (Burgundy) Chardonnay, $12.99-$24.99, 88 points, was a dark gold color.
Orange zest and apple aromas were quite pleasant.
Medium-bodied white wine with good acidity struggled with a bit of weakness midpalate, but found its energy in the long intense finish of ginger, apple, lime, and a well-balanced 11% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with our roast chicken.

Château Ferran Pessac-léognan 2015 Red Bordeaux

Château Ferran Pessac-léognan 2015 Red Bordeaux, $16.57-$19.49, 90 points, poured  an opaque ruby red with a broad clear wine ring and fat stained legs.
Aromatic black fruit with nuanced toast and mocha were excellent.
Early palate soft full body yielded to a more intense tannin base with good acidity.
Flavors of black currants and berries were accented with anise, plum, and graphite.
Finished well on a 14% alcohol imbued pepper spiciness.

Dezzani, Method Appassimento, Piemonte, Italy, 2015 Rosso Passito (DOC), $12.99-$19.99, 89 points, poured deep garnet red with a broad clear meniscus and moderately fat legs.

Early silky smooth medium body snowballed into a more tannin-driven red wine with good acidity and bright red fruit flavors nuanced with Kirsch and floral notes.
Finished long on cherry cola, easy pepper spices, and a well balanced 13.5% alcohol .
Varietals were 51% Barbera and 49% Dolcetto.

Château de Camarsac (Thierry Lurton) Bordeaux Supérieur 2015 Bordeaux Red Wine

Château de Camarsac (Thierry Lurton) Bordeaux Supérieur 2015 Bordeaux Red Wine, average price is $15.00, 90 points, poured a mottled black and deep purple/red with a broad clear wine ring and moderately fat stained legs.
Aromatic soft floral notes, red fruit, and licorice were excellent.
Full-bodied red wine with good acidity and firm grainy tannins delivered an herbal cornucopia dominated by cardamom, and showing a balanced red/black fruit attack.
Finished well on easy pepper spices, a bit chalky, and with a balanced 14% alcohol.
Varietals were 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc.
Paired nicely with my ordinary grass fed cheeseburgers.

CHÂTEAU BARBEBELLE Héritage Domaine Familial Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence AOP 2018 Rosé

CHÂTEAU BARBEBELLE Héritage Domaine Familial Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence AOP 2018 Rosé, $19.99-$21.99, 90 points, poured a lovely medium salmon-pink color.
Sweet floral strawberry aromas were defying the sheer dryness of this tasty Rosé wine.
Slightly more than a light body with bright acidity and good flavors of strawberry, red cherry, and Necco wafer did not disappoint.
Finished long with a bit of Bubble gum, watermelon, ginger, and a spot-on 13.5% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my Mexican cuisine.

Maricool 2018 Muscadet (France)

Maricool 2018 Muscadet (France), $5.99, 86 points, was a medium yellow gold color.
Aromatic Mackintosh apple and lemon zest were excellent.
Near medium-bodied (off-dry) with fair acidity delivered weak flavors of orange zest, Necco wafer, and soft apple pie.
Finished okay on the failing palate, a touch of ginger, and a balanced 11.5%.
Did not pair satisfactorily with my Gulf of Maine steamed lobster in drawn butter, but was much better with my smoked red-pepper-hot oysters.
