Wine and Dogs, Sons and Daughters: The Wonder of Sentiment

Wine and Dogs, Sons and Daughters: The Wonder of Sentiment has come to my attention lately, with  "our" appreciation of just how important these things are in our lives as we now hold onto memories. My son is grown and on his own, and our white setter doesn't walk much better than I do (about 85 years old in dog age) and the more black setter is now gone.
I'm glad I bothered to take the pictures.

I suppose that all those mountains took their toll on the setters as much as it did on me. Good times!

  1. Dennis,

Sorry to hear of your loss. People that don't have pets will never get it. I get it. Perhaps you saw in mg blog that my girlfriend and I just got "Friday" a month ago. She has taken to him like I never would have imagined. I also have a Beagle who lives with my ex. He's a good boy too. They really seek to be part of the pack and please their masters. They are family.

I will raise a glass tonight. What was the darker dog's name?

    Salute,
    John

    1. John, thanks for your thoughtfulness. Houston (The Black English Setter) was an amazing animal, sweet and he could run 50 miles in a day; he was a good dog. But John it has been a couple of years now that he died, yet I'll raise a glass with you anyway. I tend to be overly sentimental and with my little girl (65 pounds), the white setter, getting so old I'm already weepy.
      Sincerely,
      Dennis

  2. Ah....I thought it was recent and you were being overtly cathartic. No worries. I remember when I was a boy and we lost our beagle. It seemed as though no one in the house spoke for a week.

    1. John, you got me rereading my blog post, and you've made me realize that you came to the logical conclusion; I wished that I was a better writer.
Hey, this is the guy who had tears in his eyes when he saw for the first time the beauty of a Yellow billed cuckoo; talk about 'corn'! :-)

  3. Hey, is that last picture really your dog? The dogs look the same, but the picture looks like a painting.

    1. Yeah. The picture was scanned from a 35MM print and intensified by the Microsoft photo fix program. The one with my son, if blown up, looks like a painting.
John I've just opened a bottle of Ciacci Piccolomini d' ARAGONA 2005 Brunello di Montalcino to celebrate your Salute" to Houston. It is cold 56 degrees right now, but the first taste was delicious; if you've reviewed this one let me know where I can find your review.
      Thanks,
      Dennis

    2. My very first dog was an English Setter. She was wonderful, & we were inseparable from the time we got her (I was about a year - 18 months, I think), until she died about 15 years later. I think about her a lot. I think about all the dogs of my life that are now gone a lot. They are a huge part of me, & I will never forget them. I still haven't gotten over our dog Mattie that died a couple of years ago. It's so hard, & I'm glad to read that this is not a recent loss. Even so, it still sucks.

Our dogs are our family - not "like family", but family - & we're a happy family of 5. It's a good thing that they don't drink wine, or our expenses would go through the roof!

  4. Dennis,

I've not had the 2005 Ciacci, but have been toying with buying the 2006. Ciacci is typically excellent, and I find them to be a bit more on the rustic side. I'd be curious to hear your impressions.

    Claire....dogs are people too! :)

  5. Yes...yes, they are! I think they make better people than, well, people.

  6. Well, I'm glad I did the little post then.
John, my preliminary statement concern this Brunello is it is not a complex wine, but it is ever-so delicious. I hope to take a picture shortly.
