Freixenet Cava, $10.99-$12.99, 87 points, is my first Cava.
Where to begin? It seems to be very much like Prosecco, but the fizz is different (more all at once fizzy). The color is almost clear with tints of gold, the aroma seems a bit more citrus and tart. Still, a rather neutral-light and refreshing wine, stand alone or paired nicely with my sauteed scallops (good acidity).
With a hint of ginger the finish is okay.
The bottle design is intriguing and will complement certain settings.
Is this a complex wine to die for? I doubt it, but if you want something different on a hot day, something non-intrusive, and refreshing with a hint of fizz, costing little in the way of pesetas, then get out of the mold, be brave, be bold! In New Hampshire, this wine is widely available.
