Groth Oakville-Napa Valley 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, $62.99-$67.99, 94 points, appeared core black trending crushed black currant purple/red with a broad clear wine ring at the leggy glass bowl.
Redolent aromas of soft lavender, herbaceous black currant, blackberry, with hints of smoky tobacco, warm loam and autumn leaves were outstanding.
Near full-bodied with good acidity and layered sweet tannin managing to translate the aromas onto the palate with an expressed balance, like an inverted prism, focused silky power bedding the senses.
In contrast, the long finish was an intensified warm spice, a warm 14.5% alcohol, cola and residual black currant.
Wines of this caliber and expense sometimes require a comment: If you need to justify purchasing this wine, think gift, celebration, or skip all other libations for a week.
