AMON-Ra Barossa Valley 2006 Shiraz

AMON-Ra Barossa Valley 2006 Shiraz (Glaetzer winery), $80.74-$94.99, 96 points, is a Syrah/Shiraz that transcends the trend I've been on, i.e. inexpensive wine and a decline in ratings.
AMON-Ra has a color almost as mysterious as its name; it is deep dark garnet with rubies to the core and flashes of violet, but though the wine is a bit cloudy (unfiltered) there is yet a brilliance here.
The aroma is subtle, but pervasive with toasty spice and bright black fruit.
The near full-body has a gestalt of complexity that radiates throughout the wine experience and is a cinema, a spectacle, a drama that separates this Shiraz from the run-of-the-mill wine: a beautiful color, an enticing bouquet, a developing palate that is both deep and delicious, refreshing and (dare I say) cerebral, with damson plum, blackberry, sweet cherry, and licorice, but the finish explodes and lingers long with black and white pepper with hints of cayenne on tart cherry. The 14.5% alcohol is perfectly integrated and innocuous.

My son cooked a Roast pork tenderloin stuffed with mozzarella, and tomato onion chutney, over sautéed Broccoli with a tomato crème sauce, which paired nicely, though this wine, which is excellent by itself, will pair well with lamb or beef, or almost anything, in my opinion.
I found the Amon-Ra at store 33 in Manchester's North end.

Amon-Ra 2006 Shiraz Revisited

Amon-Ra 2006 Shiraz Revisited, is a replay of of Ben Glaetzer's remakable red wine from the Barossa Valley ($80.74-$94.99, 96 points)
All I can say is that the three of us were in awe of this absolutely wonderful red wine. Ben says "this is how you work it."
Ethan says "give it to yourself-best wine ever."

Ninety Plus Cellars McLaren Vale 2010 Shiraz

Ninety Plus Cellars McLaren Vale 2010 Shiraz, $9.99, 83 points, is a muddy black to purple wine with coffee notes on plum and a bit of diesel on the late palate. The aroma has just a hint of cooking spice on plum and a bit of pond-water. Having a full body doesn't save this wine, and being new and having a screw-cap doesn't warranty this Shiraz against faults, but my guess is that this is just another in a long line of poor Australian Shiraz wines that would cause, if not for Amon Ra, Mitolo, Two Hands and some others, me to forego them completely; If Miles were from down-under, these wines would have been his 'Merlot'.
The 14% alcohol is well integrated, and the finish has some truncated pepper, but they are not enough for me to buy another bottle. I bought this wine at Market Basket.
A final note: with some air this wine did slightly improve. Also, I get no pleasure in gainsaying this wine or any other wine, but when I plunk-down my money and come away with something I can only force myself to drink, I'm not a happy camper! If you have tasted this wine and disagree, feel free to kindly comment.

Wines From Down Under aka Terra Australis Incognita

Wines from 'Down Under', aka Terra Australis Incognita or just plain Australia have been staple wines since the genesis of my wine adventures.

So why have I only tasted five Australian wines all year? Maybe it's because there are so many wines and so little time; maybe because almost half of the Australian wines I tasted this year were less than satisfactory, but that can't tarnish "the blood (that) is worth bottling" outrageously great wines from Australia which were formative and keeps me coming back.
For whatever reason, I'm seeking out a few boomerang Aussie wines to refresh my love of what they do as well any other country: turn grapes into wine, and when I'm done, "she'll be apples."
Captain Cook had no idea what his Australian adventure would be like, and either do I, but in-vino-veritas.
The best vistas from the past seven years were these:
