Rombauer Vineyards California 2012 Zinfandel

Rombauer Vineyards California 2012 Zinfandel, $24.99-$29.99, 90+ points, poured a deep purple/red with flashes of maroon toward the leggy glass wall and broadly transparent rim.
Cedar, blackberry, clove, cinnamon, and chocolate notes were wonderful.
Full, rich, and smooth body carried fair acidity with a supportive underlayment of tannin.
A floral component dominated the early plate with wild blackberry and sweet cooking spices transitioning into the mid-palate, while the 14.9% alcohol dominated the late palate into the long finish of spice and the trailing gestalt (trust you'll like that!).
Varietals were 94% Zinfandel and 6% Petite Sirah.

  1. I'm not sure, but it seems that 2011 was a better vintage for Zinfandel!
I'll have to look into it!

  2. Hmmm, used to buy this quite often, but kind of gave up on it several years back. May have to revisit it.

    1. VG: 2007 was supposed to have been a good year for Napa (loved the 2007 Cabs), but this was the first vintage Rombauer Zinfandel I tasted, and I didn't like it, but after waiting years to taste again, the 2011 Rombauer Zinfandel was wonderful!
      I've learned not to quit!

  3. Well, it's very young, which is good I think. I find Zinfandels don't age that well.

    1. VG: There are precious few Zins in NH (approx. 100), but I will be putting more experiential evidence to what we already know: Zinfandel is better tasted young. I have several that I've enjoyed immensely from 2006-2008 which I'll be re-tasting this year; The Chateau Montelena was the first, and as I said, I liked it just a little better this time around.
