Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, 2018 Merlot, $14.39-$15.99, 88 points, poured a brilliant ruby red bordering on blood red with surprisingly fat/lightly stained-legs, and a broad clear meniscus.
Aromas were also surprising with smells more like a Chianti than Merlot; smells of Kirsch, black tea, and a hint of cocoa were good.
This was a medium-bodied bone-dry red wine with bright acidity, a thin firm blank of tannin, and flavors of hibiscus, eucalyptus, black cherry, and a hint of cigar.
Finished long on trailing flavors, a hint of cocoa, and a deceptive 13% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my cheese steak-tip sub.
Not a soft round red wine, but more an edgy Chianti-like tipple.
