IL Poggione 2011 Rosso di Montalcino

IL Poggione 2011 Rosso di Montalcino, $22.09-$25.99, 91+ points, poured a bright pomegranate red with some bricking toward the broadly transparent ring at the leggy glass wall.
Floral toasty strawberry aroma was grand.
The medium body carried intense acidity with strident tannins which gave power to the complex flavor profile: oak, red cherry, strawberry, tobacco and coffee notes were well balanced and rich.
Finished very long on accelerating tannin, bourbon, mint, and the tart trailing palate with a well integrated 14% alcohol.
Paired very well with spiced lamb loin chops and green asparagus tips.

  1. Could have done with a bottle of this last night, as Thud treated all of us to a home-cooked, Italian inspired, baked-ziti dinner...had to imbibe in something domestic in the end.
    Floral, toasty strawberry sounds nice.

  2. VG: It is a very special thing when a wine region is so consistently good!
