Groth Napa Valley Hillview Vineyard 2016 Chardonnay, $28.04-$32.99, 94 points, was a light gold color clearing toward the glass shallows.
Aromatic bouquet of gossamer flowers with hints of flint and green melon were outstanding.
Medium-bodied with good acidity righteously delivered the bouquet onto the palate with whispers of tangerine and pineapple.
Finished very long on minerality, ginger, kiwi, and a spot-on 13.8% alcohol.
Paired perfectly with my New England clam chowder.
This is a magnificent, elegant, and Cali-contrary white wine; if you're looking for an over-oaked Chardonnay, this isn't it, but if you're looking for a perfectly balanced Cali rendition of Chablis, this is the one.
Groth Vineyards, why it's a "go to" winery.

A couple of notes: Why is it that red wines score higher than white wines? I believe it is because too many fail to notice or give white wines credit for their occasional rarified quality, subtleties, intricacies, and sheer pleasure. I'm glad that as I compile my top recommended wines tasted in 2018, at this point white wines line-up thus: numbered 1, 4, 6, 8, 13, and 14 out of 15 listed.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo!
ReplyDeleteI share your consternation about white versus red, especially when the best critics in the world often assert that Riesling is the greatest varietal, EVER.
You've made my day.
DeleteAgreed, your photography is brilliant. Any interest in trading this photo for some vino? hint...hint.
