Bouza 2008 Tannat

Bouza 2008 Tannat-Red Wine of Uruguay (Tannat intro by Tablas Creek Vineyards), $12.99-$18.99, 90 points, appears just a tad more purple than our familiar Red Bordeaux wines, but this purple/red wine is a hair shy of opaque, and terminates with a clear watery rim.
Quite aromatic with a slight bacon, earthy blackberry, hints of clove and violets wafting out of the glass (very nice).
Nearly full bodied with mouth watering acidity, persistent with manageable tannin, and flavors reflecting the aroma, this wine reminds me of a more mellow Wind Gap Castelli Knight Ranch 2007 Syrah, not as complex, but very focused.
Bouza 2008 Tannat finishes with a long belt of cayenne pepper, a hint of licorice and a touch of heat (13.8% alcohol).
If you like a big red wine, a tasty wine for few pesos, then this is of great value at the $12.99 I paid.

Cline Cashmere 2011 Red Wine

Cline Cashmere 2011 Red Wine (GSM), $10.70-$17.99, 86 points, shines brightly with the most brilliant ruby red I've ever seen.
Voluminous red fruit make-up the aroma, and with an earthy raspberry/strawberry leading the way, I was sure a fruity wine would follow; I was right! The flavor profile follows the nose well, add red cherry, licorice and more subtle chocolate notes, and those desirous of a fruit-forward wine will not be disappointed.
Mild to moderate acidity, and mild tannin carried on a fruity-smooth base, almost, but not quite, surrender this wine sweet
The floral finish was a bit weak with hints of spice.
Varietals are Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Syrah.

Joel Gott 2011 Zinfandel

Joel Gott 2011 Zinfandel, $12.74-$16.99, 86+ points, appeared as a slightly cloudy ruby trending purple toward the transparent rim.
An unobtrusive toasty plum aroma sets the stage for a good Zinfandel wine.
Full bodied and smooth, mild acidity and tannin carried this unobtrusive wine's dominant flavors of plum, licorice, and blackberry surprisingly well for an under $15 Zin.
Finishes fair on the trailing palate with just a touch of black pepper and some heat (14.3% alcohol).

Jaboulet Côtes du Rhône Parallele 45 Rosé

Jaboulet Côtes du Rhône Parallele 45 Rosé, $11.99-$14.99, 89 points, appears more peach than Rosé, but it is a vibrant peach of high clarity.
The sweet strawberry, watermelon, lime, and Kiwi on the nose is subtle and lovely.
This Rosé is quite dry on a light bed of good acidity and just a hint of tannin.
Flavors mirror the nose with some floral notes, but trends toward the neutral side of Rosé.
Finishes on a trailing palate with gentle ginger notes and a touch of heat (13% alcohol).
I paired this Rosé with Asian cuisine and found it delightful. Later we had it with hot Buffalo-wings, and there too, it was great! This is a versatile summertime refreshing wine.
Varietals are 50% Grenache, 40% Cinsault, 10% Syrah.

Rosé Wines (International) are in the Pink!

My few comments on Rosé Wines can only be viewed from a lack of experience, but do not include the oft derogatory feminine connotation (no "blushing" allowed), though Rosé Wines are generally lighter, crisper, more refreshing, and subtler than the typically big bold Red varietals from which Rosé wine is made.
New Hampshire wine lovers that haven't ventured into "The Pink" will have a good number of these wines to choose from, should they want to explore this overlooked wine-expression, especially Rosé Wines from France, of which there seems to be an influx in late spring to early summer.
Now, as I have advocated in the past, when venturing into unknown territory you might want a "map/guide" of sorts; I have taken my own advice, and the last few Rosé Wines I've tasted were recommended wines, and all were quite good and worth the adventure.
Sandra Crittenden is the latest advocate/guide to give direction through the wine-brand maze.

Gianfranco Alessandria 2011 Barbera d' Alba

Gianfranco Alessandria 2011 Barbera d' Alba,
$14.53-$20.99, 88 points, appeared as a dense ruby and tapers toward the clear glass wall with an almost unfiltered purple/red color.
The nose was toasty blackberries with the slightest petrol note.
Medium bodied with good acidity and edgy though mild to moderate tannin made for an excellent red table-wine; to reiterate the Italian adage: "Chi ha pane e vino, sta meglio del suo vicino (Bread and wine are better. . .)."
The flavor profile reflects the nose with a hint of plum.
Finished fair on spice and a climatic heat (15% alcohol).

Origin Brut Prosecco

Origin Brut Prosecco, $17.00, 91+ points, has a light burnished brass color, and pours typically frizzante.
A soft vanilla-pear nose pleasantly trumps most Prosecco wines I've had.
This Brut-dry white sparkling wine is on the Prosecco-neutral side, but subtle citrus and pome with Glera grape that is found deep into the finish alongside mild ginger notes, are very good.
I bought this Prosecco at Shaw's Supermarket in Goffstown.

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut Champagne

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut Champagne, 375 ML, $25.00, 89 points, a very bubbly (small bubbles?check!) off gold color with aromas of pome and citrus held together in a crisp light-plus body of good acidity.
My son loved this Champagne (he didn't pay for it), but I think that I'm near hopeless when it comes to these wines, for example, where he finds toast and butter I find hints of yeasty bread and near-rancid butter (just me being hyperbolic); I don't want to wreck havoc on this wine, it's really pretty good, but for how much I paid, as is typical for my experience (not experienced at all) with Champagne, the Quality, Price, Ratio (QPR) remains problematic for me.
I remain skeptical that reasonably priced Champagne is much more than social paraphernalia.
Those who love Champagne, please accept my apologies for my lack of enthusiasm. I'll still taste these wines on occasion (never give up), but I doubt that my opinion concerning Champagne will ever have any gravitas (consider this post nothing but digital-filler). However, if there are other disappointed dabblers in Champagne tasting out in the cyber world, that empathize with my attitude, I would absolutely love to hear from you:)

Château D'Aurilhac Grand Vin Haut-Médoc 2010 Red Bordeaux

Château D'Aurilhac Grand Vin Haut-Médoc 2010 Red Bordeaux, $21.59-$23.99, 91 points, pours into the glass with the by now familiar color of most of the 2010 Bordeaux red wines I've looked at (I'm uncertain as to the notion of a Bordeaux vintage color or not), and the Château D' Aurilhac Grand Vin Haut-Médoc is no exception, though the very dark ruby red trending purple is not opaque, it is quite dense, excepting the obligatory transparent rim.
Black licorice, earthy black cherry, and mint, coalesce beautifully on the nose.
Having a smooth medium-plus body with bright acidity and fine-grained full-bore tannin gives more than ample life to the rich black fruit (especially currant), tangy pomegranate, violets, and crushed dried herbs that trail into a subtle finish of spice and a touch of heat (14% alcohol).
Varietals are 49% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Petit Verdot, and 2.5% Cabernet Franc.

Montsarra Brut Cava

Montsarra Brut Cava,  $16.99, 91 points, begins with a lovely light gold color and good effervescence.
An interesting and delightful cherry blossom, apple, lemon and vanilla aroma continues the excitement in a wine that has been hit or miss for me.
The light-plus body is both crisp and creamy as it coats your lips and mouth with lemon-vanilla meringue and lastly apple flavors, yet has the acidity to keep things buzzing and lively.
Finishes on a trailing palate with ginger and lots of tingling sensations.
I bought this at the Harvest market in Bedford.

Late Summer best-Buy Wines

Late Summer best-Buy Wines denies that Plonk Wine is the only value wine.
"Value" wine is a relative term, but keep in mind that most wine purchases are under $15.00, in general, good Red wine is more expensive than good White wine, and in general, the more you pay for a bottle of wine, the better the wine!
Considering that Labor Day is upon us, and I for one am getting prepared for a family celebration, I'm also considering what wine(s) to share that will please without breaking the bank.
So, since I can only rely on wines I've tasted, I'll follow-up on Best wines of 2013 just before summer with the best (QPR) wines I've tasted since.

Recantai Shomron Israel 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

Recantai Shomron Israel 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, $13.99-$16.99, 85+ points, presents itself with a light silvery gold color.
An apple aroma has hints of petrol.
The light-plus body carries high acidity, a rather flat dominant pome flavor that leads into a similar finish with green grape.
Sauvignon Blanc wines are usually best imbibed young, and though this bottle of 2010 Recantai seems a bit tired, it is good enough that I'll look for a 2012 vintage to compare.

Cline Sonoma County 2009 Syrah

Cline Sonoma County 2009 Syrah, $11.99-$13.99, 83 points, begins with a not so clear ruby red trending an off purple color with a thin clear rim.
A "barnyard" nose yields to a bit of petrol and red grape.
The medium body carries fair acidity with mid tannin onto the palate with a hint of mint up front and a mirror image of the "aromatic" profile.
Though the texture is okay, and the finish has a touch of spice, they are not enough to save this wine.

Poggio Antico 2007 Brunello Di Montalcino

Poggio Antico 2007 Brunello Di Montalcino,
$53.54-$69.99, 95 points, begins a shade or two more Bordeaux in color than this Brunello's big brother Altero, having a less orange hue and a more red trending purple with an obligatory transparent rim.
Truffle, an earthy red cherry and only hints of savory, cardamom, and flowers, makes for a subtle though lovely aroma.
The less edgy medium-plus body carries a bounty of food friendly acids, layered and leashed tannin that walk into the finish with the aromatic flavors as well as toasty black cherry and tobacco notes with just the faintest red pepper and 13.5% alcohol warmth, not heat.
This is a wine of elegance, humility (power under control), and balance; I love this wine!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Brunello is the most consistently excellent of wines I've tasted, and if you are looking for something special to go with your Mediterranean lamb, that's what I paired this with, and a salad with Feta cheese and big black Greek olives, or a perfectly cooked roast beef with gravy, then think about perfecting that bounty with a wine that will enhance everything.

Wine Blogging Motives and Modus Operandi

Wine Blogging Motives and Modus Operandi

Wine Blogging Motives and Modus Operandi isn't so much about wine reviews, as it's my way expressing some feelings and observations about wine blogs and wine bloggers.
The best example for examination is myself. My motives are mixed, but first and foremost is my old love of photography and my new love of wine followed by a desire to journal those loves.
My photography was transformed and continues to evolve, but the time and costs represented are considerable; others have decided by hook or by crook to plagiarize some of my efforts (no surprise that wine bloggers can be cheats as are people in the general population). When that plagiarism is pointed out, I usually get "I didn't know" or these plagiarists just ignore my complaints.
As one who isn't trained or talented in writing, that too comes with much effort, but understandably as of yet, hasn't been found to have been copied.
As of August 2013, I have not advertised or taken wine samples for review, it is a choice I've made for a number of reasons, but I don't consider those (boggers taken seriously) who avail themselves of these benefits of in any way doing something wrong or of being compromised, though the danger is always lurking in the background.
Wine blogging is immensely more difficult and costly than I would have imagined, and that is reflected by the vast number of wine bloggers which come and go; sadly, some of whom have become friends (I have never considered this to be a ZERO-SUM game).
Many wine bloggers use the medium as a way to keep family and friends abreast of their "goings-on" and some use wine blogging incidentally as an educational tool in addition to their reviews, commentaries, or presenting paired cuisine creations. Some wine bloggers pour more than wine, they pour their hearts and their souls into their blogs; this is not a light thing to disparage or misuse, but to respect.
Lastly, many bloggers have discovered they have a cyber-neighborhood, a "place" where they live and enjoy other blogger's "lawns" and "flower gardens", even sharing their labors of love.
Human kindness doesn't have to stop with family or physical neighbors, and in some sense can even be better expressed (more authentically) with those having common bonds of wine, education, and dogs.

Just a few thoughts to consider!

Pitch Columbia Valley 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

Pitch Columbia Valley 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, $13.50-$18.75, 88 points, appears as a dark ruby trending black currant in color right up to the clear rim and lightly draped glass wall.
An earthy black cherry aroma with hints of cedar and coffee are pleasant.
The moderately smooth near full body carries good acidity with noticeable yet easy tannin, and just a touch of mint up front.
Flavors of licorice, red cherry, and blackberry, though a tad too sweet, are okay, while the trailing palate adds hints of spice to the fair finish.
I bought this excellent value Cabernet as a close-out at the Hannaford's Supermarket in Londonderry.

Bolla 2012 Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie IGT

Bolla 2012 Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie IGT, $6.99-$7.99, 88 points, appears clear with a light brass finish.
An easy floral green melon aroma though not distinctive is still good.
The light bodied straight-forward white wine from Italy breaks crisp and uncomplicated with good acidity, and a purely white grape flavor offset with hints of lime and fresh juicy honeydew melon which are carried gently into the fair finish garnished with tangerine.
This is a more subtle wine than a gulper, but will suit your pocket-book and your friends at any clam-bake.
I bought this at the Market Basket Supermarket in Londonderry with a coupon.

Château D'Aiguilhe 2010 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

Château D'Aiguilhe 2010 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, $38.74-$44.99, 91 points, has a near opaque ruby red trending purple color that drapes the glass wall, and rims clear.
The profuse aroma of cedar, clove, earthy cinnamon with violets potently encroaches on the palate. The near full body carries additional nuanced flavors of coffee, cardamom, and savory with a mouth watering acidity and firm comfortable tannin. Though not the most fruit-forward Bordeaux, black currant, boysenberry, and blackberry, are mildly present.
Finishes with notes of tobacco, cayenne, and licorice with some heat (15% alcohol).
The 2010 Château D'Aiguilhe is considerably better than the 2008 (in my humble opinion), and more than $12 more as well.

Honig Napa Valley 2012 Sauvignon Blanc

Honig Napa Valley 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, $9.83-$16.99, 91 points, has a spring-stream clear color with a faint creamy gray hue.
The aroma ranks as one of the most beautiful and interesting I've smelled this year, with pine needles, lychee, honey, and lilac.
A light-plus body has typically excellent acidity while carrying grapefruit and honeydew melon, with a hint of lemon grass flavors that walk right into the finish of citrus and ginger notes.
This 2012 Vintage seems to be excelling, and the Honig Napa Valley 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, is right up there with the best I've had this year, or any year!

Jade Mountain Evangelho Vineyard Contra Costa County 2005 Mourvèdre

Jade Mountain Evangelho Vineyard Contra Costa County 2005 Mourvèdre (pronounced), $13.40-$24.99, 88 points, appears ruby toward brick red with a thin clear leggy rim.
Only faint notes of tobacco and coffee remain on the nose, though a hint of wet cardboard dissipated quickly.
Licorice, coffee, flowers, plum, and still tight tannin on the end palate still grace this medium-plus bodied red wine and reveal life yet abundant and quite good. Though the acidity was mild, it was just enough to pair with a barbecue.
The trailing palate carried the finish with some heat (14.5% alcohol) and a good blast of red pepper.
I bought this wine almost three years ago as a close-out at the Merrimack Shaw's Supermarket.

CAPANNA 2008 Brunello Di Montalcino

CAPANNA 2008 Brunello Di Montalcino,  $45.82-$59.99, 94 points, has a dark crystal-clear ruby color, but with just a slight trending orange toward the broad clear rim.
Earthy red cherry with cedar and clove notes fashion a subtle though pleasant aroma.
A smooth medium body carries plenty of food-friendly acids, and a perfect backbone of tannin.
Flavors of dry bay-leaf and tobacco melt into the red cherry and pomegranate fruit which trails nicely into the long finish of black and white pepper with just a touch of heat (14.5% alcohol).
Though reminiscent of other CAPANNA Brunello wines, the 2008 has little to none of the Bourbon-like notes which I've become accustom to; this one seems, to me, to be a more "traditional" Brunello.

Riesling (Australia)

Riesling White Wine has so many profiles that I'll bore you if I try to go into detail (the mature wine taster will already know), or I'll leave out some things important to the topic, but let it be said that a good Riesling is as fine (NOBLE) a white wine as you'll ever taste, but a bad or not so bad Riesling can be a bottle of wine you'll taste and pour-down the drain.
If you live in New Hampshire, and are a "Newbie" wine taster, my complete list of Riesling wines (almost all wines bought in NH) can be found in the Index of reviewed wines, but I've decided to break that list down to aid access by Smart-phone users into Countries, because Riesling is so distinctive to the region it is grown. It is common to hear someone say I only drink German Riesling, etcetera. Now mind you, an experienced wine taster would likely say that about terroir in all wines, but I tend to think that it is truer of Riesling than any other varietal I've tasted.

Australian Riesling is a white wine rather rare to New Hampshire wine stores, though as you can see, I have found some and rejected buying others, because frankly and for the most part I haven't enjoyed them. Keep in mind that in Australia, Riesling is enormous, and to paint it with a broad brush is folly, but when buying wine, one has to make choices, and as it is with me so I leave those choices with you.

Riesling (USA)

NYT presents an excellent intro into American Riesling, and in many ways confirms many of my early tasting notes, especially my first love Riesling, Chateau Ste Michelle 2009 Eroica Riesling which I first tasted three years ago and is still my benchmark Riesling.
As the list of reviewed Rieslings grows, it will become convenient and easier to navigate the list of USA Rieslings in separate categories, e.g., Northwest, California, and Finger Lakes Rieslings, as they make up the bulk of my reviewed Rieslings.
